Nerd, parent, bio-geek, union rep, tinker, LEGO aficionado, bookworm. Trans rights are human rights.
Fun found bio-nerd art left on the hallway walls at work. Artist unknown, but it’s good to see our students keeping their sense of whimsy this time of the semester. (Also, the art is impressive!) The Boomslang makes me think of @seananmcguire.bsky.social, mainly for her love of snakes.

My outfit for today. Happy Halloween!

Today involved telling my daughter that “The cat has my homework” is not a viable excuse, even when true.

My daughter came home and promptly expressed concern about finding these two winged creatures finishing up on the 3d printer. I can’t imagine why she’d be concerned, just because she’s in the D&D game I’m running on Sunday… :)

I spent some time yesterday helping the Blacktron crew build more of their Message Intercept Base, after the project stalled for a few months. It was good to get back to it, and I’m still having a lot of fun posing the minis for “in progress” photos.

This is one of my mom’s watercolors that I yoinked ~20+ years ago when my roommates at the time were complaining about the walls of our apartment feeling bare. I’ve kept it and a few others of her works on my walls ever since.

I got to meet a turtle hanging out in the creek at work this morning. One of our students called me over to ask if it was OK, and I assured her that it looked like a happy turtle friend chilling in the water.

My hard copy of @seananmcguire.bsky.social’s new Toby Daye novel just arrived from @mystgalaxybooks.bsky.social , with a lovely preorder sticker sheet. Having already read my e-copy, I can ID all the babies on here and am delighted by them.

Sympathy, insomnia sucks. Have a kitten photo for luck in today’s endeavors.

My daughter and I finally finished our build of the D&D Lego set yesterday. It took a year of stolen moments before heading off to work & school, and was a lot of fun to build. Now we just need to have some friends over to play through the adventure module that goes with it.

Enjoying some family Magic play on the train ride home from Worldcon with some Edge of Eternities prerelease kits we picked up from @outsidercomics.com at the con.

Playing a game of Commander on the train, as my daughter and I try out our newest decks.

A pretty sunrise from the train this morning as we head north to Portland, and then to Seattle after a visit with friends in Portland. Worldcon, here we come!

After more than a decade, I finally got around to repairing my old papercraft Stirling Engine. (The blue part in the video was originally a section of latex glove, which rotted out, so now it’s nitrile.) When Joshua gets home, she’ll enjoy it, but I’d better brush up on how it works before she asks.

My family and I went to our local shop’s Magic: Edge of Eternities prerelease yesterday. This set is full of delightfully pretty cards, and my daughter pulled a lovely pulp-SF inspired Sliver Overlord that I couldn’t resist putting up a photo of. I think we’ll be getting more of these cards…

No cheating. Post the last pic of your pet.

Bedtime cat.

Celebrating July 4th by exercising some of the rights my ancestors fought for us to have.

A photo of me at the end of last night’s Pride Skate event, with a delightful dragon face-paint piece taking up my entire forehead, courtesy of @anoosh100.bsky.social who was an excellent sport with our family’s oddball facepaint requests.

How we spent our morning. My daughter had the best sign of the three of us, as she’s the best artist.

In light of @seananmcguire.bsky.social’s recent bracelet-crafting posts, I feel a need to share the one my daughter made for herself at Pride yesterday. We’re clearly doing something right raising her.

OK, that statement requires posing this local artifact. It’s more 1990s than Tomorrow, but definitely upgraded from mud brick.

Bwahaha, cat training achieved! After several months of bribery with treats immediately after brushing their teeth, we have gone from Sugar hiding when she sees the toothbrush to both Sugar and Louise coming to the bathroom at bedtime to insist on getting their toothbrush & treats time.

I just finished reading @seananmcguire.bsky.social’s latest book, Overgrowth (under her Mira Grant pen name), and it was amazing. The book is simultaneously a horrific alien invasion story a la Day of the Triffids and a sweet story of love, friendship, and found family, and you should go read it.

The shirts are making funny noises, I wonder what’s going on…
