A #WIPWednesday from ch9. Hey did you know that openings are hard when you leave the previous chapter off in a soft, cushy place without setting up any of the next stuff? 😂

(aka: well well well, if it isn't the consequences of my own actions. etc etc.)
He's beginning to understand the human impulse toward art, he thinks. Ed's face is so close, so sweet. His eyes aren't bothering with the crinkles at the edges, he's even let go of the merry glint, he's just…warm and soft and—Stede thinks—Stede dares—recognizably happy. Twenty thousand years ago, early humans painted the terrifying beauty of their world onto cave walls. Something compelled them to the work, some deep well of fear or awe or quite possibly whatever this eager, urgent thing is in Stede's own chest. He's quite certain that he'll lose something essential if he can't find a way to keep this sight, burn it onto the backs of his eyelids: the loose knot of Ed's hair, the glint of his earrings, the tiny flecks of dark paint above his temple. Or how Ed's eyes go hooded, how he leans in—how the nearness becomes sweet and hypnotic— oh— how his nose brushes Stede's, how Stede understands, how his eyes flutter closed— But art wouldn't be enough, it would simply fail to capture so much. The warmth of Ed's body along his own, or the sweetness of this comfortable silence, this breathless anticipation, the barest touch of lips. The loud growl of Ed's stomach.

“Wait, wait, go back to that,” Jay said. They’d only had a few sessions at that point, and Ed was still in the info-dumping phase. He’d been through a couple therapists by then, none of whom really stuck. He liked Jay, though. Felt like he could tell them stuff. At least, some stuff. “The wife?” Ed grinned, satisfied with the small thrill of having a juicy story. He had some regrets about the whole thing—of course he did—but also a lot of great memories. “Or the throuple?” “Yeah,” Jay said, pointing their pen at him for emphasis. “That part.” “Well, first I gotta talk about Jack,” Ed said, settling into his spot on the sofa. Jay nodded for him to continue.
