He loves being the Taskmaster and he loves Stede, and he really wishes Izzy would stop nagging him to just talk to Stede about how he feels. Stede Bonnet thinks that he's the luckiest man on earth to have a best friend as wonderful as Ed Teach. He can't imagine his life without Ed in it, and has never felt quite so connected to anyone ever before. Pity that he doesn't really get along with Ed's oldest friend and comedy partner, Izzy. Izzy Hands has been Ed's friend for longer than he's been the Taskmaster's Assistant, and has watched Ed and Stede 'fucking oblivious' Bonnet pine after each other for long enough that he's actually allowed himself to be dragged into an elaborate plan to get them together. Now the three of them are in the studio, along with the rest of the cast for the new series of Taskmaster, the crew behind the scenes and, of course, the live studio audience. Surely nothing life-changing is going to happen over the next five days of filming. Here it is! Another combination of two things that I adore - Our Flag Means Death and Taskmaster. I've been thinking about this AU for a while, especially inspired by a piece of art that Mint posted on bsky. I began writing in January 2025 but then took a bit of a sabbatical, picking it up again properly in July/August. As of first day of publishing, this is still a WIP, but I'm aiming to stay ahead of the publishing schedule (Thursdays and Mondays) with my writing. Let's see how we go. The end game of the fic is Gentlebeard. However, while it's all about getting Stede and Ed together, I'm having fun exploring the dynamics across the three of them through the lens of their performance personas vs their personal lives. Izzy and Ed had a sexual relationship in the past, and it is referenced in passing, though they are simply friends and coworkers now. And as part of the elaborate plan to get Ed and Stede together (finally!!) there will be fake flirting between Izzy and Stede, with some insights and revelations along the way. I know that won't for everyone, and completely understand anyone choosing not to read the fic because of that. A03 tags page for the fic.

For this week's #OFMD #WIPWednesday, some snips from Episode 8 of Your Time Starts Now. We're in the middle of a prize task inspired by Mint's art (quoted). This piece is what got me to finally start writing the Taskmaster fic I'd been thinking about for a while. Thank you, @515253545.bsky.social!
"So, this charming gift - originally from Edward, actually, which was very thoughtful - has been very helpful in that regard." Stede's prize flashed up onto the screen and Ed had to blink a few times to make sure he was seeing it correctly. It was... It was the fucking purple tentacle dildo that Ed had gotten Stede for his birthday a couple of years ago. It had (mostly) been a joke about Stede's cryptid obsession and what bits his perfect man would have, and they'd had a laugh about it. Over the years Ed had barely wondered if Stede had ever used it and he'd definitely never imagined it during the darkest hours of the night. But there it was, stuck to Stede's bathroom wall - not the guest bathroom, but Stede's actual en suite, where he kept all of the fluffiest towels and that had definitely not featured said dildo the last time Ed had been visiting. He let out a bark of shocked laughter, thankfully drowned out by the audience's reaction. He glanced over at the contestants - Stede had a shit-eating grin on his face as he looked up at the screen and Oluwande was slumped down in his chair with both hands covering his eyes. Archie, Ivan and Jim all looked somewhere between horrified and impressed, though Archie yelling, "Freak!" at Stede seemed more on the impressed side. The image flickered and was replaced by another one that was almost exactly the same, except the dildo had all different types of curlers hung off or over the raised suckers, and there were a couple of teasing combs balanced precariously near the very base of it, closest to the suction cup holding it to the wall. "Have you lost your mind?" Ed hadn't meant for his voice to come out at quite that high a pitch, but what the fucking hell, dude? Stede, smirk still firmly in place, and that bloody dimple of his making an appearance, lifted his eyebrows and spread his hands innocently. "What? I thought you'd like that I'd put it to such good use. It's really so handy - sticks well to the wall, I can move it where I need it, everything I could ever want is held between its suckers." Fucking diabolical little shit. "Stede. You know that... That's not what it's for, mate." Ed had been aiming for casual, just-two-mates-talking-about-sex-toys, but it came out as more of an outraged squeak. Stede's eyes grew even wider, and Ed was the one with the wide eyes here, had the fucking patent on giant innocent princess eyes, so what the fuck did Stede think he was doing stepping all over Ed's gig? Stede fluttered his eyelashes as he asked, "Oh? What's it for, then? Please do educate me." Ed snorted. "Well, the word 'dildo' in big fuck-off letters on the side of the box should have been all the education you needed, mate." "Oh, I thought that was an anagram!" Stede let out a self-deprecating giggle. "Did you now?" Ed asked, silkily. "And that anagram was...?" Stede, the fucking lunatic, didn't look fazed in the least - in fact, he practically radiated smugness. He'd actually come up with an anagram, hadn't he? God, Ed fucking loved him so much. "D - Do," Stede began, ticking each letter off on his fingers. "I - It yourself. L - Longline, cos it's really rather long, isn't it? D - Diffuser and. O - other hair-related items Organiser." Stede grinned triumphantly. "Do It yourself Longline Diffuser and other hair-related items Organiser. DILDO." Ed rolled his eyes but didn't interrupt the audience applause that greeted Stede's ridiculous anagram. He watched as Stede crossed his arms, practically threatening to split his jacket at the shoulder seams, and then cocked an eyebrow challengingly. Ed leaned forward and lowered his voice a little, as if he and Stede were in a private conversation. "So I'm assuming you've never..." He waggled his eyebrows suggestively, not sure if he wanted Stede to break or to continue with the bit. Stede tilted his head as he finished Ed's question. "Put it to its intended use?" "Yeah." "What, and ruin my hair routine?" Stede, patting his curls with a proprietorial hand, sounded absolutely appalled at the idea, and Ed finally broke, folding forward as he laughed.

Now it's Stede's turn to choke on his tea. He does so considerably more spectacularly than Ed, though, coughing and spluttering until his cheeks turn a deep shade of crimson. Of course, Lucius picks that exact moment to return with their pie. He sets the two slices down, glancing warily at Stede. "Is he okay?" Lucius asks. "He's not, like, choking or having an allergic reaction or anything is he?" "Nah," Ed says, trying his hardest not to laugh. "He'll be fine. He just needs a minute." Stede gives Lucius a thumbs up as he dabs at his watering eyes with a napkin. "Oh, thank God," Lucius sighs. "I really didn't want to have to do the Heimlich manoeuvre. See, I have this whole thing with my lower back…"

New York is gray. It wasn’t always like that, Ed knows – it used to be vibrant and colorful, yellow taxis and neon bar signs, displays of art along every sidewalk. It tasted like cigarettes and bourbon and sweet red wine, and the sounds were all music, poetry, and possibility. Now it’s cold and damp and gray, and Ed feels like it’s been winter for a year. He slips into a busy cafe and miraculously claims a stool along the window bar, shoving his bag and guitar beneath the tabletop. It’s early but the shop is loud, humming and thrumming with conversation, patrons and waitstaff alike shuffling through the space, and some sad bastard that’s been given stage time to practice his banjo. Ed doesn’t want to spend too much time here, but he does need a plan to get from this day to the next. He pulls his gloves off with his teeth, reaches for his wallet and takes stock of his remaining cash. Five dollars. Five dollars and some change, maybe, but he’s about to spend the change on another cup of coffee and maybe a bagel or some eggs. He eats and stares out the window and he doesn’t waste a crumb. The streets and sidewalks are already buzzing, average Joes delivering boxes or off to scrub some dishes, poets and painters and singers just like him, all of them trying to earn a buck or get inspired; ideally both, he wagers. The musicians, they’re probably hoping to get discovered, too. Ed surely wouldn’t mind if opportunity fell into his lap like that; it’s happened for some, at Cafe Wha? and the Gaslight and the Bitter End. Never say never. He wonders, watching the people outside zigzag in and out of frame, how many of them still see New York in color, and how many see it in gray, like he does.

Did you see what Soap Opera Digest had to say about you this week?” Lucius asks, handing over a flat white that’s still a mostly-drinkable temperature. Stede sighs and sips his coffee, double-checking his hair in the mirror before leading him out of Hair and Makeup and into the Burbank sunshine. “What is it this time?” he asks. “That I’m too much of a rookie for a role this big? Did they call me Australian again?” Lucius wrinkles his nose and opens the studio door, holding it open for him. “Actually, they called you a silver fox, which implies that you need your roots done, yes, but also that you’re winning them over,” he says, and Stede can’t quite bring himself to feel flattered at the implication that he’s old or not on top of his hair maintenance. “And they don’t even know about your villain arc yet, so consider it a blessing; these people can go absolutely feral about a heel turn and you never really know which direction it’ll go, but if they find you sexy, it certainly helps.” The fact that anyone might find him sexy is still mildly baffling to Stede, but he’s sort of learning to believe it. Ed had been quite convincing the other night, after all, not that he should be thinking about things like that before filming a slew of serious scenes. In any case, he’s hoping Ed might convince him a little more after dinner. “Yes, well, I’ll look forward to the insane comments on my old Instagram posts, once those episodes start airing,” he sighs, wondering whether he might actually be too good at his job,

Archie followed Jim through the tent, her duffel bag with her belongings over one shoulder and the wicker basket that contained Beau, her pet python / other half of her circus double act. “But what really happened?” she probed again. “Last year?” Jim had their back to her and they tugged a cloth out of their back pocket, polishing the sheath of their already immaculate knife. “Don’t know what you’re talking about.” “C’mon dude, I’m not that gullible.” Jim flashed her a look over their shoulder, some kind of knowing smirk. Archie grinned and rolled her eyes. “Okay, I am a bit but to believe that whole story that it was just a fire that resulted in a change in management? When both The Gentleman and Blackbeard have never been seen since? Mr Hornigold and Prince Richard too?” “I don’t know what to tell you, that’s what happened,” Jim shrugged, turning back to their knife cleaning. “I know I’m like… new here. But you can trust me, you know Jim?” Archie said after a few moments, lowering her voice and stepping closer to the knife thrower. Jim looked at her, their pretty brown eyes narrowing as their gazes caught. They were closer together than Archie had anticipated actually. The gas lantern in the corner flickered, a small flash of bright gold causing the room to light up just a little brighter. Jim looked over to it and grinned as the lamp shone more brilliantly than before. A second flash of light joined it, a stream of violet light, almost moving of it’s own accord to sidle next to the golden light. “Lamps don’t normally glow purple now do they?” Archie said curiously, watching as the lamp lights intertwined themselves together in a perfect coil. Jim shrugged their shoulders again. “There’s a lot of things you have yet to learn about this place,” they said, a glint in their eye that Archie was determined to get to the bottom of. “Anyway, we’re late for practice. Zheng will go mad if we delay her schedule, let’s go.” Jim ushered Archie out of the tent, away from the unusual lamp light. The lights flickered together, always side by side as they danced around the circus watching Jim and their new prospective lover. They loved love, after all. It’s what keeps The Circus running.

"The fucking state of you," Izzy says, but he doesn't even try to sound anything but vaguely amused and maybe a little bit turned on, and Fang's face breaks into that wide, dopey grin only ever prompted by one person. "Lulu popped round," he says, sounding lazy and half-dazed, which—fair. Izzy's been on the receiving end of those attentions enough times to get it. "Fucked my face a bit. Pissed off again. He did make me a cup of tea after"—he waves his hand weakly in the direction of his '#1 DAD' mug on the bedside table—"but I forgot. Probably cold now." "Probably," Izzy agrees. He sits on the bed, edging his backside up towards the pillows, and guides Fang's head to rest in his lap so he can start picking at the dried flecks of come on his beard. "He'll fucking kill you one day, you know that? Wear your stupid old heart right out." Thoroughly unconcerned at the idea, Fang's stupid grin only twitches wider, and he nuzzles a tickly kiss into Izzy's palm. "Yeah. Nice way to go, though, hey?" "Nice for you," Izzy says. Ed takes a sip, and the cherry-like flavor brings him back to his drink last night, and laughing with Stede. His eyes seek Stede out by instinct. He’s standing just a few feet away, taking a sip from his cup. He moans with pleasure, and Ed feels his cheeks flush. He steps closer to Stede, unable to resist teasing him a bit. “Surely you’ve tried this before, mate.” Stede smiles and laughs, a little self-conscious. “It’s a particular favorite of mine.” “Mine too,” Ed says. “Reminds me of that drink last night.” Stede lights up, on firmer ground now. “Oh, yes! I wrote up the Royal Vessel for the guidebook. I was wondering if you’d like to look at my notes? Offer any suggestions?” “You want me to look at your guidebook entry?” Ed asks slowly. Stede does know who he is, yet he’s asking for help instead of throwing Ed off the tour? Stede’s cheeks are pink, likely not from the alcohol, not so soon. “Oh, well, perhaps it’s a silly idea, but you know the place better than I do.” “Not silly!” Ed nearly shouts. When a few people stop to stare, Ed clears his throat. “‘S’cool, I can help if you like,” he adds, super chill and casual style. “Perhaps at lunch?” Stede’s eyes are wide and hopeful.
