A Drabble for any book! Heavily inspired by the Night Circus with mild sort of spoilers for the ending of it just in case …
Archie followed Jim through the tent, her duffel bag with her belongings over one shoulder and the wicker basket that contained Beau, her pet python / other half of her circus double act. “But what really happened?” she probed again. “Last year?” Jim had their back to her and they tugged a cloth out of their back pocket, polishing the sheath of their already immaculate knife. “Don’t know what you’re talking about.” “C’mon dude, I’m not that gullible.” Jim flashed her a look over their shoulder, some kind of knowing smirk. Archie grinned and rolled her eyes. “Okay, I am a bit but to believe that whole story that it was just a fire that resulted in a change in management? When both The Gentleman and Blackbeard have never been seen since? Mr Hornigold and Prince Richard too?” “I don’t know what to tell you, that’s what happened,” Jim shrugged, turning back to their knife cleaning. “I know I’m like… new here. But you can trust me, you know Jim?” Archie said after a few moments, lowering her voice and stepping closer to the knife thrower. Jim looked at her, their pretty brown eyes narrowing as their gazes caught. They were closer together than Archie had anticipated actually. The gas lantern in the corner flickered, a small flash of bright gold causing the room to light up just a little brighter. Jim looked over to it and grinned as the lamp shone more brilliantly than before. A second flash of light joined it, a stream of violet light, almost moving of it’s own accord to sidle next to the golden light. “Lamps don’t normally glow purple now do they?” Archie said curiously, watching as the lamp lights intertwined themselves together in a perfect coil. Jim shrugged their shoulders again. “There’s a lot of things you have yet to learn about this place,” they said, a glint in their eye that Archie was determined to get to the bottom of. “Anyway, we’re late for practice. Zheng will go mad if we delay her schedule, let’s go.” Jim ushered Archie out of the tent, away from the unusual lamp light. The lights flickered together, always side by side as they danced around the circus watching Jim and their new prospective lover. They loved love, after all. It’s what keeps The Circus running.
