“This is charming!” Stede exclaims as they move towards the horseshoe-shaped bar. “What do you recommend?” “They do barrel-aged Negronis,” Ed says, mentioning their most famous item. Stede must see something on his face. “But that’s not your favorite.” He sounds very sure of that. Ed half shrugs. People who aren’t Stede always assume he otherwise, but Ed has a wicked sweet tooth. How had Stede seen that? “Too bitter,” Ed admits. “You should try one, though.” Stede does, whereas Ed opts for brandy-based drink with chocolate and cherry. It’s got bitter notes, yes, but the sweetness Ed typically craves is there, too. “Mmm, fuck yeah, that’s the stuff,” Ed says, after a sip. He looks up to find Stede watching him with a flare of desire in his eyes. Or is it? Stede looks away quickly, and Ed decides he was seeing things. Everything seems sexier in candlelight. Ed takes another sip of his drink. The sweetness and bitterness are incredibly well-balanced, complementing each other perfectly. Stede takes a sip of his as well. “Delish.” Ed can’t believe he wishes he could fuck someone who says delish unironically.

Ed watched as Stede pulled it back on, securing the belt again. He smiled at Ed and went to the door. The room had a narrow entryway created by the placement of the bathroom, which meant that from where Ed was sitting on the bed, he couldn’t see who was at the door, but he heard Stede’s gasp, a sharp intake of breath, a sound that conveyed shock. Ed didn’t think, just stood, the heavy fabric of the robe sliding off his lap. He snagged it, flinging it around his shoulders as he rushed to the door. Stede was frozen in front of it, his father standing outside of it, but weirdly, for once, not barging in. Ed tried to recalculate on the fly—he wasn’t supposed to be here in Stede’s room, in the morning, and barely covered by a robe. But the moment to avert this disaster was already passed. Father Bonnet was looking directly at Ed. There would be no excuse for this; they looked like they’d been doing exactly what they’d been doing. Ed continued his forward movement, sliding his shoulder in front of Stede to force him behind him. Ed was the same height as Stede’s father, but the man had the advantage of being in shoes, so Ed had to lift his chin to defiantly glare at him. He did it, though, daring him to make a move toward Stede.
