Can I just point out what an incredible accomplishment this is? Another NOVEL-LENGTH work by one of the most talented writers I have ever encountered, in any genre. The depth of the story, care for its characters, the care for US as readers? Impeccable. I can't wait to read their final chapter.

Summary: It's not all sex, in the days that follow. Okay, that's a lie. ‘Not all sex’, Jesus. Ed can't even say it with a straight face. I love you. Hell of a phrase, I love you. You’ve got the I, first off. Good opener. Strong. Exclusive, intimate, personal, all in one little downward stroke. Name a fucking word out there that does as much heavy lifting as I. There isn’t one. I strips off all the defences, puts the speaker front and centre. I means you’re about to be perceived. Known. The you, that’s a great one, too. A big, glaring spotlight of a word. It narrows the focus, points a fierce, jabby finger: you. Risky, that you. A real cannonball smash of a landing. There’s nowhere to hide once you’ve said it. Love, though. Holy fucking shit. Love is the most enormous word Ed knows. Love blacks out all of Ed’s senses while simultaneously being so blazingly vivid he can barely stand to look at it. And then. Oh fucking hell, when you whack ‘em all together? I love you? Ed loves hearing it almost as much as he loves saying it. No, more actually. Definitely more. Hearing it, that's like…it’s full-body shudders, that's what it is. Hearing it is being engulfed in safety flames and snuffed into a curl of wispy smoke, all at once. Ed has a genuinely visceral response every time he hears it, this precipitous rush of sharp-edged endorphins, spiking his pulse, goosebumping his skin. Depending on how adoring Stede's eyes are when he says it, sometimes Ed forgets to breathe. However. Upon further consideration. Maybe Ed does prefer saying it, actually. Like, gun to his head, if he had to choose between hearing it and saying it? Yeah, saying it. No, hearing it.
