From firing the local MAGA-allied police chief to calling for the abolishment of ICE, so much inaction by elected Democrats boils down to "but I'm scared!"

I am very sorry, but you said you could do this job when you were hired. Please step aside if you can't.

Every retirement age Minnesotan I’ve seen on video in the past couple of days is literally speaking calmly and furiously in ways that would have had me sitting still and quiet in my desk like a prey animal if it were a school setting. I have never seen anything like it.

A friend who is working to organize rapid response told me this yesterday:

ICE is snatching people as they get out of their cars at gas stations, leaving the cars at the pumps, often with the doors wide open. People responding have to move the cars and then find out how to reach family.
Kind of feel like a lot of politicians, even in Minnesota, are misreading the implications of this moment. I feel like the past three days have been tremendously radicalizing for so many people. I have witnessed it even in my own small communities, it goes beyond just incandescent rage.

Another friend witnessed ICE pulling up on the sidewalk and grabbing a woman wearing a hijab and shoving her into their car and driving off. No conversation, just snatch and grab.

We are being terrorized and we still have politicians being dumbasses about it.

The Kennedy Center has been *open* for 55 years. It is weird to me the story is being framed like this (I don’t blame Stereogum, NYT did it too).

Much more powerful to say The Washington National Opera has been a part of The Kennedy Center since the beginning. Now they’re gone.

THE OLYMPICS: OK Italy, we're giving you 2026, can you pull it off?
ITALY: Yes, we just have to build one arena, very easy, the easiest of any Olympics

(2026)

THE OLYMPICS: OK we're here! how is that one arena looking?
ITALY: (sitting at a cafe, reading a newspaper) mi scusi????
You say "all the venues" but this is basically the only new venue they needed to build. Everything else was existing or temporary.

The Italians couldn't build one (1) arena on time, when they had about 7 years to plan.
if you're surprised to learn that the Winter Olympics are just a month away, don't worry, you're not alone, the people building all the venues in Italy also appear to be surprised the Olympics are just a month away

As a reminder, here are texts Charles Exum wrote bragging abt shooting Marimar Martinez in Chicago on 10/4.

Exum yelled "Do something bitch" as he shot, first through windshield, then side window. ALSO a Greg Bovino deployment. ALSO a weapons instructor.

Taunting is not a justification for arbitrary executions. Collective guilt is contrary to the rule of the law. Resisting the state— even if unlawful and prosecutable—doesn’t justify a death sentence. Our colonial ancestors rejected that agents of the state are absolutely immune for their wrongdoing.

WSJ investigation: In the past 6 months ICE agents have fired at vehicles 13 times, leading to:

* 8 people shot
* 5 of which were U.S. citizens
* 2 died
* no victims drew a weapon

The playbook: Agents box in a vehicle, block attempts to flee, then fire

Videos Show How ICE Vehicle Stops Can Escalate to Shootings
A WSJ visual investigation found that the Minneapolis ICE killing is one of 13 incidents where federal immigration agents have used deadly force against civilians in vehicles since July.

It’s hard to know if people outside MN understand how much of life is grinding to a halt here because of Trump’s occupation. Schools have shut down, businesses are scaling back hours or closing because their employees aren’t safe. The whole city is weighted down.

Yes, it’s really hard to capture the full scale of the federal assault on the Twin Cities. At any given point dozens of locations being harassed, across Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and the 185 suburbs. Hundreds of roaming cars, highway checkpoints, heavily armed convoys. We are under attack
People keep asking “where” ICE is in Roseville and I’m like “they’re everywhere, assume they’re everywhere”

And also there are thousands of community members observing and monitoring and protecting

Actually seems huge that Craig is here
JUST NOW: Huge mass of agents in a standoff, weapons drawn as Reps. Ilhan Omar, Angie Craig, and Kelly Morrison attempt to conduct congressional oversight at the Whipple Building, which has been HQ for thousands of ICE agents.

I’m comfortable moving to “Nuremberg is the compromise position”
A woman recording an ICE agent tells him "Shame on you."

The agent responds, "Have you all not learned from the past couple of days?"

"Learned what?" she asks

Then he knocks her phone out of her hand

The only way the next democratic administration is going to do anything even somewhat resembling reforming and rooting out lawless thugs from ICE and elsewhere is due to sustained popular pressure. Otherwise, the instinct from the Dem elite to just turn the page and move on is going to be massive

It is difficult to explain how dire this situation is. There are 2,200 ICE agents in Minneapolis right now. They are heavily armed and are operating with no rules. The MPD only has 550 officers. StP even fewer. How can they protect us against an invading army? Because that's what this is.
Federal immigration officers are pulling out of a Louisiana crackdown and heading to Minneapolis in an abrupt pivot from an operation that drew protests around New Orleans and aimed to make thousands of arrests, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.

yeah they’re just grabbing random people at bus stops there is absolutely no attempt to even give the pretense that this is about immigration anymore. it is absolutely just a military occupation
Not an exaggeration at all to say that the feeling in Minneapolis is that the entire metro area is being treated as occupied territory by federal agents. Impossible to overstate how overwhelmingly people here do not like it. This does not feel sustainable.
