ICE has now purchased at least 1,639,595 sq feet of warehouses in Texas they plan to use as camps. One just 20 minutes from my house.

And that’s just two articles I’ve seen this week.

They are not changing course.

I also want to reiterate that the obsession with determining whether Rachel Reid is straight or not actually works to make invisible the fact that a GAY MAN created the show. The show is from a gay man's perspective. It is informed by his experience as a gay man. It is a gay man's show.
1) the Game Changers book series is actually a not at all subtle critique of the culture of homophobia and toxic masculinity in hockey

2) regardless of Rachel Reid's sexuality, which has not been publicly confirmed as straight or not straight, Jacob Tierney is an openly gay man creating gay media
Anyone who is actually a former gay hockey player will tell you hockey is one of the most homophobic sports (and that’s saying something). There’s a reason there’s never been a NHL player out during his career. This is just straight cis woman fantasy holding up gay men as idealized soft masculinity.

Long Covid friends—

A bill in the Maryland legislature would create an R&D fund for LC—a big deal when new federal funding is stalled.

The advocate behind the bill is asking for people anywhere to submit written testimony on Fri 2/6 on your experience w/LC, to say why this is needed!

Damn. Tuberculosis cases are occasionally reported in the U.S., but an outbreak of 50 cases in San Francisco is extraordinary. There's no good TB vaccine -- BCG is used in some countries, but it's not very effective.

Does anyone have a relatively objective resource about the problems with genAI type platforms? Something that runs down how they bake in biases, are programmed to keep people engaged by agreeing, etc? I feel like I saw something by CSET but can’t find it again.

We’ve been watching Schitt$ Creek with the kids over the last year, and I am so sad to hear that Catherine O’Hara has died. She brought so much joy and laughter to complete strangers.

Just went to listen to a podcast and it started with a fake content warning (“contains brooms and graphic depictions of curling”) so I bailed. I don’t mind if you add cute stuff to your content warning at the end, but you should start by seriously considering the matter and including any real items.

NEW: North Atlantic right whales - a species whose fortunes I've followed for years - are having a baby boom!!

21 mother-calf pairs have been sighted so far, the highest figure in years. And we're not even halfway through the calving season (which runs to mid-April).

A North Atlantic Right Whale Baby Boom Is On—but the Species Remains at Risk
Researchers have documented the births of nearly two dozen North Atlantic right whale calves this season. It’s an encouraging sign for a species whose population is estimated to be below 400.

Calling transphobia a 'gateway drug' to the far right undersells it. It's pure accelerant. Grimly fascinating to guess what crankery becomes any famous transphobe's secondary obsession, cos they all have one: 15 minute cities are fascism! Grok noncing is cool! ICE are good! We should kill all dogs!

Fighting especially hard with my lungs today, so I'm acutely reminded how much respiratory disability is used to code evil and monstrosity. I don't think I've ever heard a single sympathetic character in movie history make the noises the bronchitis has me making right now.
