@nicholasbednar.bsky.social’s article, “Presidential Control of the Civil Service” challenges the view that federal civil service is beyond presidential control, highlighting the president’s authority over federal employees since before the Pendleton Act.

Today, Emmanuel Mauleón reflects on the situation in Minnesota, what it tells us about the law, and how the legal community should respond.

Whistling at the Edge of Law
The whistle is sounding in Minneapolis. The question before the legal profession is whether we will hear it, amplify it, and act accordingly, or instead insist that the ground eroding beneath our feet...

@matthewtbodie.bsky.social was interviewed by @nytimes.com about the decision of the NLRB to end its investigation into unfair labor charges leveled against SpaceX. Eight employees had filed charges with the NLRB accusing SpaceX of firing them for their criticism of CEO Elon Musk. z.umn.edu/b2jv
Reminder that Starbucks’ CEO made 6,666x more than the company's median employee in 2024.

Now, Starbucks is lifting a cap on the CEO's use of a private jet to commute from California to Seattle.

It's been four years since Starbucks stores began unionizing and workers still don't have a contract.

You should read this. It is the type of detail that experts in authoritarian regimes see as telling.
In this case, state agents are offered impunity from higher ups, and the legal system is rendered inoperative as a mode of accountability.

Things have not improved. The government won't comply with court orders. Agents are behaving more aggressively. Schools are offering remote learning into April. The tapering of national media coverage has emboldened DHS.

the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

again we do not really do a good job of explaining how wealthy people like Jeff Bezos are

his net worth is $253.2 billion.
so he could take one million dollars, and just light it on fire
and then do it again tomorrow
and again the day after that
and then do it every day for 693 years and 8 months

The hometown newspaper that I read as a teenager through Watergate and Vietnam and made me crave the life of a reporter is now being butchered by a billionaire who had $75 million to bribe and flatter a president and his wife but nothing to save journalism, an bulwark of the republic itself. Got it.
Old: “Go on home, get a nice hot bath. Rest up...Then get your asses back in gear. Nothing's riding on this except the, uh, first amendment to the Constitution, freedom of the press, and maybe the future of the country.”

New: “Go on home…Nothing’s riding on this.”

In the last 48 hours, Musk's reactions to the Epstein release show exactly why he bought Twitter.

He's used the platform to call coverage of his emails with Epstein as "lies," elevated his fans who have defended him, and gotten positive reinforcement from his AI chatbot.
