Today in Incredibly Grim Sentences
“Rising infertility rates and the fragmented nature of the fertility industry have made it a ripe target for investment groups and private-equity firms, which have acquired clinics and agencies in an effort to create one-stop-shops for couples seeking to have a baby via surrogate.”

Italy also wasn’t full unified as a country until 1870 and went through a lot of tumult and violence even after that—some people certainly would have called it a shithole country at the time.

This person IS onto something in that one of the driving ideas behind AI is “People should be able to get luxury goods while preventing anyone who can MAKE a luxury good from getting any economic benefit from their skills.”
calling avoiding getting family photos done by a photographer "survival" is wiiiiiiiiiiiild

you know you don't have to get family photos in the first place, right? we've had professional photos taken once ever and it was bc we went to a photo studio in reykjavik where you dress up like vikings
this is demonic. sorry to say but if you do this you should be shipped to a desert island away from the rest of us who still have human souls

Well said on both counts. We went from binging the first season of this show in one night over pizza—we were genuinely surprised when we finished and realized how late it was—to giving up after season three because the show was becoming amorphous fluff and didn’t care about its characters.
I now reflexively think of Stranger Things as protoslop, the antecedent to AI videos about nonexistent mall McDonaldlands. Judy lays out a timeline of how its relatively innocuous nostalgia bait devolved into content extrusion detached from anything that made anyone care — the slop funnel to a tee.
Stranger Things started out as a fun, clever, well-made little distraction from the hellscape of 2016. Then we all started living full-time in the Upside Down, a franchise-thirsty streamer stretched one season's worth of story into four, and—much like our brains—the show never recovered.

And Tiny Tim, who was the best of Tims, who was the worst of Tims-
And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, well, if you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where he was born, and what his lousy childhood was like, and how his parents were occupied and all before they had him, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but
And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, beats on, boat against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past

Today is Yule, the holiday we celebrate. Our tradition is simple, and borrowed from Iceland: Bookflood. We give each other books, then laze around all day, picking at no-effort food while we read.

It's the best, most relaxing holiday tradition I've ever been part of and I love it so much.

“And Tiny Charles Dickens, who did NOT revise…”
The greatest act of authorial pantsing in English literature might well be Dickens's pulling a 180 on Marley's promise of three spirits, one per night.

"The spirits have done it all in one night. They can do anything they like. Of course they can. Of course they can."

Indeed, Chas.

If you hire the right stooges, you don't have to tell them 'DO CRIMES'
From @parkermolloy.com at New Republic. newrepublic.com/article/2047...

I'd go a bit further. The system needs no conspiracy to function. It just needs everyone to understand the direction things are going in. Bari Weiss was put there not to protect a legacy, but to align its politics differently.

The extreme attack on transgender youth we are witnessing from a governmental stage was enabled by The Atlantic and The New York Times.

On Friday I left a message at a Schumer office along those lines. It's frustrating and crappy and borderline abusive that they make people drop everything and call them whenever a bill like this is proposed instead of saying loud and clear, "We will always block these hateful proposals."
when i call on this, i tell my senators that publicly committing to a no vote on these bills now regardless of if/when they come up in the senate is a thing that they should do—if only because a lot of their trans constituents have hard enough holidays as is.

feel free to give that one a try.
what should you do? call your senators.

what if they're GOP? call. some house GOP voted against both.

what should you say? try one of these scripts. make it your own! they're less than a minute with built-in bail outs. yes, you should threaten your vote.

who's your senator? tap here: reps.fyi 🧵

That said, they're not all doing it. This AP article DOES put the trans care restriction in context of other anti-trans attacks and notes that every medical association says this is a bad idea.

It's truly remarkable how there will be news organizations and journalists who correctly identify that RFK is a menace and that HHS can't e trusted when he pushes stuff about vaccines or Tylenol causing autism... but cover the anti-trans stuff like "Well, HHS says so, and we should trust HHS!"
Trans youth healthcare is based in decades of research and supported by every major medical organization in the US. Under RFK Jr, a handpicked panel produced a dodgy report claiming otherwise.

It's a clear example of Kennedy's war on science. So why aren't news organizations treating it that way?

I feel like some news organizations in 2025 are backing away from trans-inclusive language they’d used for a decade or longer—because the nature of both-sidesism is that the right can always create a controversy by insisting there is a controversy.

There is a tremendous opportunity for a brand new generation of media outlets to rise up right now because many news outlets that spent decades painstakingly building their credibility are seeing it torched by bootlickers with incredible speed.

Chappelle hasn't made anything funny in almost 20 years. Like, folks rightly point out that becoming a TERF is personality-destroying, but I think it's also notable that "artists" only become TERFs long after they've stopped making even half-decent work.
