as a kid at the time, the things i most remember about 88 were (1) how terrified the political establishment was of jackson's message and popularity and (2) how suddenly every political cartoon pivoted on a dime from drawing him as iconic civil rights leader to drawing him as a showboating grifter
" But his campaigns for president in 1984 and 1988 helped create the image of what the modern Democratic Party seeks to be but rarely seems to achieve: a multiracial coalition of voters dedicated to economic fairness." RIP Jesse Jackson.

Jackson's presidential runs in 1984 and 1988 played a significant role in shaping the modern Democratic Party.

One way to identify right-wing dominance of the US media environment: This is much more direct, egregious government censorship than the biggest claims of the “Twitter Files”—including ones they made up that had no evidence behind them—and will get a small fraction of the attention and outrage.

One of the funny things in the prepper community is how it is all gender. The husband only hoards guns and ammo, the wife only hoards food.

At no point do their hobbies intersect the way they do in reality, in ways actual people do.
If more preppers were serious about learning all useful skills – and not only the macho ones – they’d learn crocheting and/or knitting. It’s SO important to know how to make wearables in a pinch
Two months ago I started crocheting, and now I’m making people handmade presents. I love art and crafts

Incredible commentary from this Swiss announcer, who accurately characterizes the Israeli team as "Self-defined zionist to the core...who posted several messages in favour of the genocide in Gaza...calling it ‘the most morally just war in history.’”

Solidarity to a real one.

It feels so demoralizing that for decades Cuba would send their doctors all over the planet to help victims of western imperialism, natural disaster, etc, but now that they need help every nation on earth is silent.

People clapped for a half time show, but nothing has changed. Pure evil is law.

I understand framing the AI bubble RAM supply crisis in terms of stuff like video game consoles because nerds can conceptualize that but the framing does really undersell the sheer magnitude of how it's going to fuck up everything that even touches a computer.

Yeah, ppl think of this as a gaming issue but really we are at risk of losing access to computing altogether, so that it's all exclusively in the hands of the oligarchy. Conceptually the end of the democratization and access to knowledge and information. And end run to a different kind of dark ages

Just did this.

"Rude" is essentially a shadowban and is capriciously applied.

"Rude or impolite, including crude language and disrespectful comments, without constructive purpose."

Dudes, your CEO was shrieking "Waffles!" at people.

The Twilight Zone episode “Miniature” always makes me sob. Robert Duvall played a lonely man many today would see as autistic, with such kindness and heart. Like Boo Radley, he made us feel compassion. Thank you for the humanity you gave us, Mr. Duvall.
RIP

A giant loss: Robert Duvall is gone. An extraordinary artist who was fluent in every dialect of film acting, from ice-cold underplayer (The Godfather) to expert naturalist (Tender Mercies, The Apostle) to balls-to-the-wall maniac (Apocalypse Now). One of our all-timers. Plunge into that filmography.
Robert Duvall, the legendary actor whose career has spanned over six decades, has died at 95, his wife announced

Sparta was always the right wing fever dream of a militarized society built on exploitation and rigid stratification - that never changed. It worked for a few generations until it didn’t but they were too conservative to adapt and then they became a historical footnote

Am I going to be the only one to suggest that firing a public school teacher for speaking out on a matter of public concern raises profound First Amendment issues, and we should pause before cheering on such actions when that power can be weaponized against progressive teachers in red places? 1/3
This “beloved” Chicago teacher, James Heidorn, believes he was pushed out of his job due to a two-word post on his Facebook account.

Oddly enough, the heavily Hispanic district didn’t appreciate him posting “GO ICE”.

The historical accuracy debate is complicated and probably beyond the scope of social media.

In theory, creatives should be able to use history as a jumping off point for their art. In practice, wrongheaded artistic decisions immediately contaminate public perception and sometimes cause harm.
