can the next big term that gets treated like 'abolish' and 'defund' where it's not the exact right term to use to beg for table scraps, be 'expropriation'

this word feels like it is crackling with electric power right about now

Every so often there's a story about polling that breaks through as though it is some immutable insight into fixed values, rather than a reflection of what people with power and influence are willing and unwilling to push for. The answer is not abandoning policy but doing politics in defense of it.

i think lots of people underestimate how badly these “AI” companies want people to be unable to afford computers. they view personal computing as a roadblock to their desire for complete end-to-end centralization. the fact that their tech is putting hardware out of reach is not just a happy accident

There is no drawdown. There is no retreat. ICE is just redistributing their assets to better avoid accountability.
The same day DHS announced the surge would end in Minnesota, ICE activity increased in small towns
The less densely populated areas outside the Twin Cities make it harder for protesters and observers to organize.

apparently the dutch brought the coffee seeds from the trading hub of mocha in yemen (which got its coffee from ethiopia) to java, which would be cool except for all the murder and slavery
coffee isnt even native to indonesia they just forced indonesian farmers to grow it as a cash crop and brought it to europe. even though "java" is like literally a synonym for coffee. so the cafés that gave rise to the french revolution were built on the back of slave labor in the dutch east indies

Up to 1 in 60 babies are born with not enough Vitamin K that causes bleeding if not given a single lifesaving vitamin injection. It can be fatal.

It’s a single 1mg injection, a grain of vitamin the size of the empty space in an 0 on a credit card. And people refuse due to conspiracy theories.

We've just rolled out ambient AI listening in our hospital, and my colleagues are really, really excited about it (more time doing things other than note writing). They're so excited that things like patient concerns/autonomy are lost.

We're just making up ethics as we go along with AI right now.
Hot take: The doctor shouldn't be the one asking if it's ok if she uses AI to take patient notes. The power differential + patient anxiety + short appointment times means the patient feels pressure to say yes. It should be a question asked during check-in. (I wish it wasn't used at all, but...)

This is fundamentally the transfer of compute-power as something a person can own, to something a person rents. Which is, you know, not good.
I understand framing the AI bubble RAM supply crisis in terms of stuff like video game consoles because nerds can conceptualize that but the framing does really undersell the sheer magnitude of how it's going to fuck up everything that even touches a computer.

Remember the monthly child tax credit in 2021 that was a basic income for 40 million families for six months? One of the results of that policy was that fewer parents sold their blood plasma.
Is this the “golden age” economy we’ve heard so much about?
