⚠️ When “technology will save us” becomes a climate risk!

A new paper from great colleagues takes a careful look at techno-optimism — the belief that technology will largely solve climate change — and what it means for real-world climate action.

You need to understand that when studio heads and executives talk about how AI is going to streamline the process and make things cheaper, this is the process that they've been normalizing up until now.

The sequel SPECIES II has one of the most racist things I've ever seen in my life: the heroes kill the alien by stabbing it with a bloody pitchfork after stabbing the black astronaut which the alien left alone (because he had sickle cell anemia, so his impure blood kills the creature). I was SHOCKED

I kind of love this movie for being so stupid
Watched Species last night, which is just howlingly awful. A baby Michelle Williams, as the alien’s earlier incarnation, acts everybody else off the screen; watching Henstridge play the character after that is like bringing on Kevin Kilbane for Maradona.

I’ve tried to avoid stepping out of my lane but I owe so much to the Jewish friends I grew up with whose mere existence was the first thing that ultimately broke me out of being raised Baptist, and seeing the very notion of Judaism sacrificed on the altar of this backdoor evangelism horrifies me

everyone remembers what happened to Isabel Fall.
I think we lost some work because authors were afraid to show their weirdnesses, rough edges, to ask uncomfortable questions.
We can debate all day about who got cancelled and whether or not they deserved it, but one thing I have noticed is that a lot of queer YA written from ~2019-2022 has a kind of sterile after-school-special vibe where you can just tell they sanitized the fuck out of it to appease the Twitter hivemind

The harshest thing you could say about Final Fantasy Tactics is that the earlier, more interesting narrative about class eventually gets overpowered by a plot about killing an unknowable demon god but that's also what makes it a Final Fantasy game.

The CRTC is largely responsible for the lack of a variety of news media ownership having allowed nearly every merger and acquisition to take place in Canada.

This is why we have a crisis of balanced reporting and very little investigative journalism.
How far behind is the CRTC? Netflix has been a streaming service for 18 years and they're just now updating stream regs. If we hold the course we'll have AI regs in the 2040s. #cdnpoli #cancon
