Korean adoptees were crucially involved in making these changes, which, though they don’t amount to full abolition, are nonetheless massive.

In the US, by contrast, a single state’s decision to let adoptees see their own vital records is what passes for a major victory.
anyone who knows Korea’s deeply entrenched 70 years history as a sending country for #adoption understands that this is titanic.

Make no mistake, I am overjoyed about this, but I am also holding back. Why?:
1. Korea will still be doing domestic adoption, which is also a supply and demand driven market.
2. They are making these changes because they have been exposed of doing 70 years of child trafficking.

“why don’t you trust that any offer of kindness or friendship is sincere?” well probably because my adoptive family makes regular practice of treating these things as manipulation tactics

the Korean #adoptee diaspora has displayed activist and intellectual leadership on an absolutely epic scale. It’s a story like no other.
And this would not have come about without decades of tireless effort from a coalition crucially involving people in the Korean #adoptee diaspora.

There is no doubt that the Danish and Scandinavian adoptees have been very instrumental in this. I have only been actively involved for about five years, but there are others who have worked on this for the past 15-20 years. >

so grateful to all those advocates. i also feel like those danish korean adoptees must have contributed to the shift in mindset.

I have this pairing of photos framed at home and I often think about how much it changed my life—for the better—finally to know who I take after. It has even helped me to put my aging in perspective, as I see how the same creases and lines are appearing on my face that my mother has. 🥚

This is the 2nd year my nearby bio family has done a matching Christmas Jammies party on Christmas day and it's the first big bio family event I've hosted at the lake house. Everything went swimmingly and I'm just so full of warm fuzziness after an evening of family time and good food!

Old-school academic too, since that was enough to get him promoted and tenured
You can tell that LotR was written by an academic because Gandalf disappears for like 20 years doing research to answer a single question.

I almost made it through Christmas Day without a meltdown or a tragedy, I really thought I would get through it. I’m not sure I will because Christmas still fucking sucks.

Regardless. I hope yours was better than mine, ya fucking beasties.

I will be okay tomorrow and so will you.

anyone who counters an abolitionist critique of the last 100 years’ development of an industry in facilitating adoptions, and the corresponding legal innovations (like sealing and falsifying vital records), with “adoption is as old as time,” is ignorant or self-interested or both

lots of queer folks endure lousy holiday family time because it’s better than nothing, because of a vestige of obligation, or there’s still love there.

i’ll get confrontational on someone else’s behalf but i rarely stand up for myself. i tried it this year & lost myself family thanksgiving & xmas.

i think folks offering propositions like this feel like they’re being impartial. that not making an “active” choice keeps them exculpated & blameless.

but “potential guest list includes an asshole who’ll ensure you have a bad time, but neither of you *has* to come” has fairly predictable outcomes.

I think that relinquishing whiteness means relinquishing one’s manifold attachments to white supremacy, and I don’t know what place a white person would have in any liberatory movement if they are determined to treat that demand as an insult.
Phrases like "relinquish whiteness" turn people away from liberatory movements. Think about what that sounds like to the average white person who is unfamiliar with basically everything. This just sounds like racism to them. If you want more help, meet people where they are and lead them.
