people: "the Dems need to be doing bold things to stand up against fascism"

the exact same people, a year and change ago: "the Dem candidate bringing a Republican on stage to talk together about why we need to fight fascism is Cringe and proof that Dems are just the same as Republicans"

How much documentation do your 6th graders carry? When I was in 6th grade, I could barely be trusted with a permission slip.
Every Stephen Miller tantrum and DHS recruitment ad speaks in these existential terms about "defending your culture" to elide the fact that they need people with the courage to wear a mask while interrogating a sixth grader

Good advice for most, but I fear even the Europeanest of Europeans can hear the banjos play when I open my mouth.
My not-particularly-joking advice is to pretend you're Canadian, we can't tell the difference in accents, I promise.

by the way, all of this, dozens of goons, weapons brandished massive teargassing of public space, people beaten in the street, destroying two intersections on either side of my neighborhood, horror, all seems to have been to create a distraction to abduct crying two teenagers who were here legally
look what they’re doing to my city. apologies for the camerawork

People got so tied up in Garland as a meme response to McConnell's 2016 stonewalling that they forgot the whole point Obama nominated Garland was as a compromise candidate who had half-chance at getting through a GOP Senate!
Garland going after individual rioters and not the false electors or GOP legal hacks was a massive mistake born of him being, temperamentally, a Republican, and thus opposed to any elite accountability.
I appreciate Keith’s thought & think it’s reasonable/possible; but Leonnig’s recent book (e.g.) details how, while they diligently pursued the various rioting dorks of 1/6, they dropped the ball on the suits—the FedSoc skunk-works types fabricating false electors.

🚨HOLY CRAP. An ICE whistleblower just revealed a secret memo authorizing ICE officers to break into homes without a judicial warrant, which DHS's own legal training materials say is unconstitutional!

ICE then hid the memo from the public, passing it along by word of mouth and private conversation.

2. When the UK voted for Brexit they more or less expected the rest of Europe to offer them certain concessions to keep them in the fold.

Instead everyone else bid them a cheerful farewell. The British were shocked.

I have the feeling we're in for a similar national reckoning.

*wisely, in my "I have read ten million books" voice

If a bad person does a bad thing and nobody stops him, he will do a bad thing because he was not stopped.
But genuinely senile/nuts people in firm control of a Great Power is pretty interesting academically, no? I mean, there was Kaiser Wilhelm II, and maybe Hitler....
Actually I'm not sure I like where I'm going with this.

this feels at least a LITTLE like a somewhat more grown-up version of the online eschatology of "once we Defeat Capitalism the world will be flowers and rainbows"
It also kind of assumes a triumphant victory of the People if you just Throw The Bastards Out, which kind of ignores the part where a large chunk of the American public will capitalize on Democratic weakness to elect Republicans.

Coincidentally I had to explain Freedom Fries to a couple of my youngest lab techs today, they straight up did not believe me until one pulled up the Wikipedia article
France was famously *not* on board with Iraq. There was an entire freedom fries thing!
also for that matter what the fuck are you talking about. "europeans" were not "on board" "with sudan." highly debatable if they were on board with venezuela, no i don't like those statements either, but "on board" is a nonspecific term and i am not going to endorse nonspecific language here!

Spent many years of my life in Asia (esp China) and a year in Spain and the only time I remember anything overtly anti-American was a drunk French guy in Beijing in 2003 mocking me about Bush bombing Iraq. I was like, "yeah I hate it too" and that was that
the "americans will be pariahs when they travel!!" discourse is so funny. 1) we deserve it, 2) people in other countries (excluding, say, large parts of Iraq) are in reality pretty chill about americans, great satan or no

This is in fact a point that is exposed in a French study on anti-trans families that came out a few days ago. In several cases, a kid's coming out was what got people from run of the mill political and personal opinions about feminism, queerness, and parenting, to far-right conspiracism.
I do have to point out that even with a more-accepting society, there is a gulf between "I am okay with queers" and "I am okay with my kid being a queer". People can support LGBT rights in the abstract and then get spooked when their own precious cinnamon roll makes them a "non-traditional family".

I really do think we underestimate the odds of Trump tweeting I DECLARE ANNEXATION and the rest of NATO going "nuh-uh" and then nobody having the slightest clue what to do after that.
SOF, especially US SOF with their vast array of enablers succeed dramatically because of those enablers, and their heightened training and equipment when relative to their usual third-world adversaries exacerbates the advantage in their given mission profile.

I think there's certainly a level of denial from old school GOPers that their Reaganite fantasies are totally untethered from reality. But "the U.S. wants a Europe that does whatever it says but doesn't need it" has always been an unsustainable undercurrent of transatlantic relations this century.
There's a large overlap in many European militaries between extreme weather troops and elite infantry. The sort of troops the Europeans are looking to send are probably capable of disappearing a platoon of SEALs if they outnumber them, especially if the latter have no air support..

Conservatives, after all, consistently win elections with their disciplined focus on dull kitchen-table concerns and scrupulous avoidance of distracting rhetoric about atrocities, scandals, and malfeasance.
Bad news folks: Schumer is entirely correct here. Americans outside Minnesota care far more about these five things than they care about anything happening in Minneapolis
NEW: In this interview, Chuck Schumer describes the "five buckets" Dems think are key to their possibly winning a Senate majority in 2026: housing, "the high price of food [and] food monopolies playing a major role there," electricity, "the high cost of childcare," and health care.
