The Conscience of a Hacker, also known as The Hacker Manifesto, turns 40 today!

Written by Loyd "The Mentor" Blankenship, its spirit still resonates with hackers and makers everywhere. A cornerstone of hacker culture.

It's completely unacceptable in every sense, except the very literal one, in which we are going to accept it.
Keir Starmer's spokesman tells me that X and Grok's creation of sexual deepfakes of children is "completely unacceptable" but again won't commit to taking direct action against them, or to stop posting there.

Says "all options are on the table" but suggests it's a matter for Ofcom, not Government

I’m not sure “there’s nothing we can do about the sexual abuse image factory ask OfCom” is going to hold much water as a line taken by a government which (a) has a huge majority (b) just passed legislation to regulate what people can access online

The explosion of popularity of LLMs — and the trust people put in them — indicates that the claimed death of expertise is overblown: people really do want (perceived) expertise. They just don’t like the experts. They want experts who will agree with their priors, and chatbots are the perfect vehicle

One funny thing Elon Musk figured out about the media is if, instead of providing comment to reporters, you email back an automated reply saying "go fuck yourself," the reporters will just invent their own plausible-sounding defense of your conduct to balance their stories instead of punishing you

This is the thing.

At any point when writing about Grok or any other LLM, you can replace the name of the LLM with "the computer" without any loss in meaning.

If you would not write "the computer apologized", then you should not write "Grok apologized".
Saying "Grok apologized" is like saying "my phone predictive text chose words that look like apology."

Having Grok issue an “apology” is not just insulting and stupid (obviously Grok cannot actually “regret” anything, deeply or otherwise) but cowardly: It asks us to assign responsibility to an unconscious piece of software rather than the humans and institutions who should actually be blamed.

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

You are painting a vision of a future in which teachers create lessons with "A.i.," students complete them with "A.i.," and teachers grade them with "A.i."

No learning takes place under this system.

The only benefactors of this system are the corporations being paid for the "A.i." products.

A lot of them also think we make a lot more money than we do, which they want as well.
