The Trumpists will continue to escalate. But in Minneapolis, we can see the limits of MAGA’s assault.

Trump’s authoritarian desires are limitless. But his ability to impose them on America is not.

My new piece for @zeit.de - and some thoughts, since it is in German (gift link):
US-Regierung: Wie der Widerstand gegen Maga eine Chance hat
Der Minneapolis-Moment offenbart die Schwächen der Trumpisten. Und er zeigt, wo der Widerstand gegen den US-Präsidenten in Zukunft erfolgreich ansetzen kann.

What the regime is doing in Minneapolis is extremely unpopular. While Trump and the extremists around him may think they can ignore public opinion, they are mistaken. Even the most staunchly authoritarian regime will ultimately be affected by its public standing.

ICE/CBP want to terrify people into submission and compliance so that they can operate with impunity, unimpeded, in semi-secrecy. It is not working. In every urban center these masked goons descend upon, the local community is rallying in solidarity.

And “protest,” in a narrow sense, isn’t even the right term for what we are seeing now. Crucially, in reaction to the regime sending an occupation force of masked goons, a new form of resistance emerged: Communities organizing to help their neighbors, confrontational but peaceful.

The “Where are the protests?” lament after Trump’s inauguration was always based on a (willful) misperception. Over the past year, protests have been far more numerous, more geographically widespread, and more sustained than what we saw in 2017, for instance.

"where are the protests" is a reflection of how many people's sense of reality is intermediated by billionaire owned social media and billionaire owned news media, both of which have strategically suppressed cover of the scale and frequency of 2025 protests

Seeing that photo of Obama putting the Medal of Freedom on Tom Homan circulate again. It's fake. Homan did get a civil service award during the Obama administration, but it wasn't the Medal of Freedom, it wasn't a medal (it was a certificate), and Obama didn't present it to him in person.

Can confirm. Nothing has changed on the ground. ICE still attacking people, kidnapping, all that stuff—and the city is still out protecting and helping neighbors
Absolutely surreal to continue to hear about drawdowns and lowered temperatures and things calming down in Minneapolis when, as far as I can tell, literally nothing has changed on the ground

Not satisfied with rape, he needed to know his sperm was special and so funded the work of "race scientists" in the academy and promoted online spaces for racists to yap. His allies spent the 2010's claiming they didn't have free speech
or academic freedom bc their colleagues rejected eugenics.

She was denied access to a restroom, and forced to pee in the parking lot while handcuffed.

Honestly, eat shit.

My kid and 100s of their fellow high school freshman walked out of school and protested at the federal detention center in Manhattan yesterday.

And us "Gen-X latchkey kids" are giving Trump his biggest, most durable base of support.

ICE and CBP agents seem to enjoy gratuitously breaking glass—from car windows to store fronts to homes. It’s an expression of unchecked power and dominance: “We’re in charge. We break and shatter what we want.”

And nights of broken glass have been a harbinger of worse to come.
