it is almost as if accommodating and conceding to far right ideas legitimizes them and signals to voters that the far right is a legitimate choice for governance
The Danish Social Democrats are currently on course for their worst election result since at least the Second World War, despite their brand of far-right accommodationism being touted as a blueprint for other centre-left parties.

Every year I get more woke and also have less energy to argue about politics in the real world. I care about a lot of stuff and I'll go to the odd protest and all that but if I'm at a Christmas party and someone says British rule actually benefitted Ireland a lot I'm like "wow that's fascinating".

There are good ideas about how to improve EU democracy but this is always a weak argument imo when most European countries have powerful prime ministers that aren’t directly elected either.

Countries with powerful directly elected Presidents (France, Poland, let alone the US) don't make me envious.
Funny that he never says that about China or Russia.

At least von der Leyen is approved by democratically elected representatives

"Why American-style polarisation is spreading across the West"

Two words: algorithms and incentives. Mostly incentives. Until we modify or eliminate incentives, all we can do is watch as the fabric of society is pulled apart, strand by strand. www.ft.com/content/5060...

Performing desirable behaviour and "virtue signalling" is also absolutely core to human society.

It's why we tell kids that stealing is wrong, rather than just that it's illegal and punishable by law.

Living in a place where people only treat each other well when forced to by rules would be AWFUL.
Performative decency is actually *so* important for this reason.

It tricks the 10% of ghouls into thinking that there are only 1% of ghouls.

And it makes the 30% of people that don't care one way or another follow the mostly decent crowd

to win elections the democrats need to shift even more right than the republicans. that way they can capture moderates and conservatives. and the left should still vote for the democrats

(not getting likes because my posts are Bad) there must have been a technical issue on bluesky's end that prevented a small number of new posts and accounts from getting indexed
hey folks, we've heard reports that some posts and accounts weren't showing up in search.

there was a technical issue on our end that prevented a small number of new posts and accounts from getting indexed.

we're backfilling the missing data now, and search results should return to normal soon.

That people are now being paid handsomely to hate, is a huge, huge social problem. Regulation is desperately needed. www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2025...

The thing about digital / physical ID cards is that so long as the best cybersecurity experts are creating a system that is correctly encrypted, stored, and protected, you have nothing to fear.

The question is actually whether the UK government has the funding to do this.
