Kinda coming to a conclusion to be the most successful candidate you need to engage in some intra-party bashing. It energizes people since it’s not repeating the expected party line and cliches.
Being able to speak passionately without resorting to tropes and standard party talking points is essential. Harris was boring to listen to, Trump is an evil idiot but not boring. Charisma isn’t just youth.

Buttigeig and Newsome examples of charismatic center-left.

Damn, want to repost whole thread. We’ve fallen into nihilism and the rejection of objective truth.

Best response is to ensure liberalism defeats the Nihilist Maximus on the very real battlefield in Ukraine. Putin made Trump; we must retaliate. If Americans won’t, Europeans must.

Years and years ago some redditor coined (or popularized?) "second-option bias" to explain the mechanism — people so cynical and self-impressed with their intelligence that they doubt EVERYTHING if normies believe it, and glom onto the first alternative theory they hear, so that they sound smarter.

Sweet Mother of … sheesus, there it is
This email about Lavrov from Epstein is June 24, 2018.

Less than one month later Pompeo met with Lavrov in Helsinki on July 16, 2018. Trump met with Putin the same place on the same day.

I think we finally figured out What the Hell Happened in Helsinki.

As a social scientist and a citizen, I always hate dealing with counterfactual claims about what a negotiating process *would have* gotten for your side if only it lasted longer, was done differently, etc.

So hard (impossible?) to evaluate, from Russia-Ukraine to the govt shutdown

i genuinely think that economic history is arguably the most important form of history to read--yes, even more important than your fave--because it drills down past how people felt about the world and into what they could ACTUALLY PRODUCE (just enough to survive)

my preferred candidate in Seattle for mayor is not winning, but the alternative candidate is a Newsom-like anti-Trumper moderate, and my reaction to this is “the pattern is not exactly a swing toward the left in this blue wave, but rather toward ’the most anti-Trump candidate’”

which is good imo

the future of the democratic party is a coalition of the wokest people on tumblr and absolutely dead-eyed pursuers of the national interest and the maximization of GDP
funny that the two groups in the political class who have been the least enthusiastic about trump term 2 are like neocon blob guys and economists
I feel like the econ policy people have been less annoyingly centrist on Trump than the rest of the think tank ecosystem purely because the only concrete policy he’s pursued in two months are tariffs, which like none of them like

They do not think we are a real mass movement.

That's why they have all the crazy "Cathedral" and "Longhouse" and paid protestors shit.

They simply do not believe people believe in liberalism.

They lack a realistic theory of mind for us.

Russian fascism is engaged in an existential civilisational battle against liberal democracy, with the Ukrainian working class acting as the first line of defence for Europe.

Material support for the Ukrainian armed forces is class solidarity. Arming Kyiv is anti-fascist praxis.

Next time you’re tempted to think Bluesky consensus in any way reflects the general public, remember this guy getting ratioed for being skeptical of universal masking, and then go to the grocery store and look around
I am not interested in living in a society of Universal Public Masking and neither are most people. This ask is not reasonable, and the invocation of solidarity in service of it is ridiculous.

My take now is that since the basic comforts of life are widely available, and most of the ways to pursue pleasure, amusement, and entertainment are ALSO widely available, everyone went insane about money.
I know it’s the most obvious thing in the world but it’s really sad that so many people have absolutely no desires or dreams in life except to accumulate money and our entire world is becoming a fucking pit because of it

This is an essential. "Democrats need to beat the Trumpists in elections that we ensure are free" is the best strategy for the next 2-4 years. But it is not a long-term strategy! The only possible long-term strategy is that someone else needs to defeat the Trumpists for control of the Repub Party.
“Win every election” is not a viable strategy for preventing authoritarianism

Where I share my thoughts on subjective experience with an online entity:
“Qualia” aren’t real, they are literally figments of your imagination. Being biological in origin also doesn’t make a physical process more “real.”

So obviously if the simulation is perfect the process is functionally equivalent.

Trump vs. US was the final straw imo. You cannot read that ruling and continue believing they have legitimacy. It is not only against the plain text of the constitution, it is anathema to the national ethos. It is offensively, insultingly un-American and they ceded legitimacy by committing that sin.

Waiting for SCOTUS to jump in with a one paragraph unsigned opinion saying that the greater harm here would *not* be allowing Trump to brutalized people living in Democratic cities.
A judge on Saturday ordered the Trump administration to halt its mobilization of 200 Oregon National Guard troops to protect the ICE building in Portland and its officers amid nightly protests.
