www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Since 2018, the average width of new models on sale in UK has risen from 182cm to 187.5cm, according to data from Thatcham Research – an organisation that evaluates new cars on behalf of the insurance industry. The average weight has increased from 1,365kg to 1,592kg

45 minute timelapse of Vredenburg in Utrecht, which can only be used by people on public transport, walking or cycling. Buses do not get delayed in queues or behind people cycling and people cycling are kept safe. You get safer cycling, faster transit, quieter streets, and a city that actually works

Today's BBC #Carspreading article takes a good look at the issue of the rise of the SUV, with reasons and solutions, but doesn't mention #RoadDanger at all. Children are 82% more likely to suffer fatal injuries in an SUV collision than one involving a car. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Accessible design makes travel better for everyone. For disabled people, it's essential. From working lifts to accessible loos, without it we are locked out of everyday life. That's why we need accessible transport everywhere, so no-one is left behind.

The BBC says there is a “safety debate”.

There’s not really a debate if you a pedestrian.

Research: “children 82% more likely to be killed if struck by an SUV or LTV rather than smaller vehicle.”

Being hit by an SUV increases the likelihood of death or serious injury | LSHTM
The likelihood of a pedestrian or cyclist being fatally injured is 44% higher if they are hit by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) or light truck vehicle (LTV) compared with smaller passenger cars, new

‘Profit margins are generally much higher on larger cars with higher price points’ AKA car companies profit from externalising the massive costs and harms of their strategy onto society. This needs to be stopped.

Apparently you need a massive 3t SUV to carry kids and dogs.
Whatever happened to estate cars?
UK needs a weight and size tax on these behemoths as the biggest thing most carry is their owners ego.

In the Netherlands, where the Dutch invest in safe cycling, the over-65s cycle around a quarter of their journeys, while the over-80s cycle around 10% of theirs.

Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and cycle lanes don't 'restrict freedom', they expand it.

Good news. This was one of the priority junctions that we identified needed improving for pedestrians back when I worked at @livingstreets.bsky.social in 2008!
Good progress being made on the new pedestrian crossings on the A2 at Blackheath.

Building bike lanes in a city as old as London can be complicated. You never know what's under London's roads & pavements.

We've found old pipes, cables & utilities, bones, buildings, archaeology & more.

Here we're looking at drainage solutions for the new Nine Elms bike lanes.

Generally TfL do a pretty good job but they (and boroughs) haven't done enough to support car clubs in London. This is really bad news - for Zipcar's employees, users and London public more generally if it leads to more car ownership and more car journeys.
Zipcar's UK closure is devastating loss to shared economy, and to those of us who used it to avoid ever owning a car.

UK's low VED (annual car tax), hidden subsidies for residential parking and TfL's ambivalence to car sharing all take share of blame.

Not sure what we will do, but having very local access to Zipcar was a core part of our decision to sell our own car.

This may well prove to be a boost for @pedalme.bsky.social & Zedify etc. But it also clearly is going to be a boost for private motor vehicle ownership & therefore use in London. Really hope others step in to provide this kind of service...
Zipcar is shutting down its UK operations, basically the only car club that worked in London. Massive kick to anyone who tries to live in capital without owning a car. Having been a customer for 17 years and used Zipvans to move house repeatedly, this is.... very bad! (Zipcar is owned by Avis)

Car clubs are commercial businesses, so I don't expect them to be subsidized, but I wonder too if boroughs charging £1000+/year per vehicle with the related admin efforts don't help the economics
e.g. RBKC www.rbkc.gov.uk/parking-perm...

Compare with TfL charge £140/year for a PH vehicle licence?
