Many streets in the Netherlands once looked like those in the UK today. What matters is what happened next. Hoogeveen shows this clearly: a car-dominated main road in 2019, upgraded by 2024 with cycle tracks. Dutch roads are continuously improved to make cycling safer & neighbourhoods more pleasant

Cycling through the Rijksmuseum passage in Amsterdam, through one of the world’s most iconic museums. Local residents fought to keep it open when renovation plans nearly closed it, and today it’s used by thousands of cyclists every day. A truly unique piece of cycling infrastructure.

Off London's Tottenham Court Road, Bayley Street shows that cities change. Originally a signal controlled junction from a one-way street, contraflow cycling was added and then the junction filtered with a cycle track. Today the cycling is still there, but the area is now a little square.

The reason I go on about self-driving cars is that it's like watching somebody spend 20 minutes using a thimble to fill a kettle and them saying "I can't wait for the glorious day when I'll have a robot to carry this thimble for me"

Greenery alongside the cycle track creates a nice separation between bikes and traffic, helps rainwater retention and biodiversity, and trees help provide shade from the sun and rain

A rare week of snow in the Netherlands! ❄️ I took a 19 km ride through ’s-Hertogenbosch while the city was covered in white. Slow, real-time, and surprisingly safe — despite what some online comments suggest! 🚲 (Includes a Short as well)
Ride in the Snow (’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands)
Last week was exceptional and this called for an extra post! The Netherlands had not seen this much snow in about five years. The video I recorded and published last week was filmed in Utrecht on Monday morning, when many people were heading to work for the first time in 2026. At that moment, we had no idea what was still to come.

It's great to see action starting against dangerous pavement parking. Now we need: A clear definition of what "unreasonable obstruction" means; Effective ways to enforce against obstructive and dangerous parking; Enforcement against pavements being broken by heavy vehicles.

The Cykelslangen or Bicycle Snake, a bridge which connects Copenhagen's city centre to the Havneholmen neighbourhood along with the longer Bryggebroen or Quay Bridge. A 2 minute cycle compared with 9 minutes the long way round by car.

A less common view than you'd normally see!

We're delighted the Department for Transport has launched a public consultation into reviewing the law around powered mobility devices.

This has the potential to improve the independence, physical & mental health, employment & social options of Disabled individuals and their families across the UK.
Government seeks views to modernise laws on powered mobility devices
Have your say on how laws around powered mobility devices could reflect modern technology and improve safety by 31 March 2026.

To anybody who supports sustainable transport: Please stop saying “car restrictions” just move cars elsewhere, it’s just not true
Comment & Analysis: In the past, it was mainly said by opponents of giving space to walking, cycling and buses, but more recently, a number of media commentators who are generally supportive of active travel and public transport have claimed that bus priority measures in Dublin City Centre have just moved cars to other streets. There's no data to back this up, and long-term data show a nearly annual decline in the number of cars entering Dublin City Centre at peak times.

Good morning and a Happy New Year.

We're back in action today and @rantyhighwayman.bsky.social is already having fun trying to fit UK traffic regulations into Dutch-style designs (a work in progress as ever).

Our industry has plenty of awards each year, but having recognition from those campaigning for #BetterStreets beats all of them!
Well this was lovely from @londoncycling.bsky.social at the #LCC2025 awards last night.

It really does mean a great deal for me in the push for more travel options in my home city and beyond; and for 2026, I've already got some blog posts forming!

And no, I didn't carry it on the #BananaBike, a little top-heavy!
