To be legal for use in public spaces, powered wheelchairs, mobility scooters and other powered aids that can go above 4mph must meet class 3 requirements, or be registered and licensed as motor vehicles.

At Wheels for Wellbeing, we’re really excited about how changes to mobility aid laws could transform Disabled people’s mobility rights & options. We want Disabled people to have the same rights to pedestrian movement & cycling or cycling-equivalent movement that all non-disabled people already have

Is it really safe to have a passenger on a mobility aid if the driver doesn’t have a driving license?

People who walk, run and cycle carry passengers safely all the time and don’t need to have driving licences:

What’s does the law say about not allowing Disabled parents and carers to attach prams or pushchairs to their wheelchairs or mobility scooters?

The law only covers people using mobility aids in public spaces, like pavements, roads and most parks.

Does this mean that I couldn't have my baby in a sling if I'm in my wheelchair?

You can do whatever the landowner permits on private land including your home, many shops and so on, but on public land, carrying a baby in a sling would be in a legal grey area, at best:

At the moment, children who need powered mobility aids are restricted by law to walking speed in public places until they turn 14. But children running, cycling and riding horses are allowed to go much faster - as long as they don't endanger others.

Why should mobility aid users be allowed to use bus lanes?

We’re asking for Disabled people to have the same rights to use spaces that non-disabled pedestrians and cyclists already do. That includes using bus lanes and cycle lanes.

After the winter break, our inclusive cycling sessions for Disabled people of all ages and impairments are now back up and running.

Our regular cycling sessions take place at Ladywell Day Centre, Lewisham, Croydon Sports Arena and Herne Hill Velodrome.

At the moment, the law means Disabled parents and carers aren't allowed to attach prams or pushchairs to their wheelchairs or mobility scooters, and aren't allowed to have aids designed to carry children on board.

At the moment, the law means people using aids like mobility scooters and powerchairs aren't allowed to use cycle lanes or bus lanes - forcing Disabled people to break the law or risk being injured or abused by drivers.

Current rules about mobility aids are complicated, confusing & don't make much sense.

At the moment, the law means Disabled children and young people who use mobility aids can't run, scoot or cycle with their friends.
