BikeFlip is one of the places I volunteer in Utrecht. We refurbish & lease used children's bikes monthly. A wonderful business!

Every Dutch bike, tiny to adult, has a chain guard / kettingcast. Every one is unique. The boxes below are filled w chain guards. As a novice mechanic, they drive me mad.

After almost a year's absence, Cargoroo's yellow rental cargo bikes are back on Utrecht's streets.

Ideal for anyone who occasionally needs to transport something or someone and doesn't want to be dependent on a car.

The cargo bike fleet is expected to grow from the current 90 to 150 in 2026.

It truly is one of the greatest feelings of freedom one can have in a metropolitan environment.”

ICYMI My latest video is about cycling in the dark and how we can make it more comfortable: from good lighting to travelling together.

Reguliersbreestraat, Amsterdam in 1979 and today. Once two car-parking lanes, a single tram line with cars queueing on it, and bikes squeezed between it all. Now it’s two tram lines with generous pedestrian space. Cities reflect the priorities of the politicians who shaped them.

Active commuting with children is often cited by parents as quality time spent interacting with their child and the environment, rather than time spent isolated in separate metal boxes.

Cycling after dark is part of everyday life here, but it still raises real concerns. This week I look at what helps people feel safe on those night-time rides – from lighting to travelling together.

New post and video.
Cycling safely after dark
We have entered the darker months again, and that inevitably makes cycling a little more precarious. Safety after sunset has two sides: being visible to others and feeling socially safe. As cyclists we cannot lock ourselves in, as one might in a car, so the environment matters all the more. Being visible is straightforward. A working front and rear light, together with the legally required reflectors, is usually enough.

Voorstraat in Utrecht: a true fietsstraat where bikes come first and cars are guests. It’s not just safer and more relaxed to cycle - the whole street benefits. Outdoor cafés, quieter homes, and a vibrant public space. When you design for people, cities flourish.

Here’s something that’s really important for everyone to understand.

If we design our cities just for cars, they fail everyone, including drivers.

If we design our cities with many great CHOICES in how to get around, they work better for everyone, including drivers.

Spread the word.

We just switched from autumn mums to a festive holiday theme, and it adds so much enjoyment to my commute.

Infrastructure can be beautiful at the human scale.
