Planner of cities for people & other living things. I post on life in SEA PDX Utrecht, women who create cities, bikes, climate. I'm on Boards @bikeloudpdx.bsky.social @sngreenways.bsky.social & volunteer @ BikeFlip + Fietsmeesters in Utrecht. She/her. Dr.
Why do we bike?

Climate, affordability, sociability, peace on earth, fun, comfort & joy🚲

Even e-cars are built with and rely on fossil fuel energy.

The people of Venezuela, Nigeria, Libya, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Russia, United States might all be better off if we could just leave it in the ground.

POV: You need a new garden fence & live in a country with mountains of no longer useable bikes.

What do you do? Weld 10 old bikes to a metal bar and spraypaint everything the same color.

This has always been a Bluesky-first campaign. But as of today, we will no longer be using Twitter. At all.

And I'm calling on other candidates to follow suit.

A busy fietsstraat this evening, a bike priority street in central Utrecht.

A few cars and delivery vans, many many people on bikes and walking to stores, even an in-line skater & someone pushing a full trolley of beer bottle crates.

Car-lite city life is the best for businesses AND for people.

I was working on an ice cream bike this week.

↗️Christopher Anderson has been nominated in the category of best framing in a photograph in the #TrumpPortraitPageant

Below a work in progress based on a painting of hell by Bosch.
I was intrigued by Christopher Anderson's Vanity Fair portrait of Leavitt, Vance, Rubio, Wiles, Scavino, Blair, and Miller: leaders/enablers of autocracy, responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths from USAID cuts, and many more to come.

I couldn't decide which circle they belong in. Thoughts?

Happy first night of Hannukah, to those who celebrate.
An idea for a present, for those who like to build.

Every city has its Main Street. Streets with active shoppers, lots of stores, delivery vans, buses, maybe some housing above the retail level.

Instead of making your Main Street just another four lane car street, how taking a car lane and creating a place that invites people, young & old?

A very small group of billionaires and trillionaires with a lot of power has decided our future will be digital and post-human.

And then, we have cities: bright, rainbow-colored dots of humanity, creativity, industry, and culture.

I vote for cities.
Are you interesting in cities and how to make them better for everyone? Bluesky has, in my observation, the biggest and best community of urbanists and city-builders on social media, and STARTER PACKS were a KEY to creating that! I have a bunch of them. This was my first! go.bsky.app/G7isZfk

Bluesky has felt sleepy for a while now. I want to encourage everyone to post more. Text is fine, but you know what? People enjoy damn near any picture of something neat. Food, your bike, a cat, whatever. Also, liking is nice, but reposting is what actually helps exposure.

Utrecht has made space not just for bikes, but for trees.

Trees are prioritized, given space, and maintained by the municipality, not just in parks, but along every road that is developed.

A resilient city prepares for the future on a warming planet.

My hyper-local Saturday news from Utrecht:

📌 Neighbors are celebrating a wedding.
📌 Teens put fireworks into the trash bin.
📌 People are bringing home bargains from holiday sales.
📌 I fixed the brakes on a 14" bike at BikeFlip

Imagine learning how to bike - and learning to bike for transportation - as an adult.

The 10 women in Fietsmeesters where I volunteer graduated this week. All can balance on a bike. Most have successfully ridden with a teacher in traffic.

Excellent work! New classes start in Utrecht in the spring
