And housed and fed people of course.

Voor mij is het kenmerk van een echt functioneel stad is een glad fietspad, vrij van bladeren en afval.
En natuurlijk mensen die er wonen en eten

I post so much about how wonderful life is in Utrecht for people outside of cars that you might think cars don't exist here.
They do! But cars are controlled in Utrecht.
Here's a long line of cars waiting to get into an underground parking garage for big fall sales at the shopping mall.

When you take a big breath and think about it, it is horrifying how much material we use & then throw away to build mountains of private cars every year.
We strip mine the planet, enslave children and adults, and degrade our souls to feed our endless appetite for cars and more cars. We can change.

On this beautiful fall day it's easy to imagine old Utrecht from centuries ago. The sounds of shoppers, dogs, churchbells, children, bikes. The Havendienst (port service) barge delivering beer to canal-side taverns.
It's harder to imagine cars here just a few decades ago.

Correction: Utrecht enforcement cars use an array of cameras not LiDAR
What's important?
1. All cars/trucks must have license plates
2. Zero Emission Zone + curb use is consistently & constantly enforced
3. Money from enforcement (upwards of €20M/year) goes into street safety improvements
big WINS

Utrecht has a fleet of ~6 of these cars topped with LiDAR. They circle Utrecht making images of parked cars throughout the day.
Since people don't always follow parking rules, Utrecht earns €50-100K a day. All that € goes into street improvements.
All it takes is cars with license plates (+ LiDAR)

There is a vote Oct 29 in the Netherlands to elect a new parliament.
While the PVV (Party for Freedom), led by anti-Islam right-wing Geert Wilders still leads in the polls, its lead has fallen from 26% to 20% since November 2024. Dutch coalition politics, with more than a dozen parties, is complex.

Most of these 1500+ OV-fiets bikes at Utrecht Centraal are returned at night. They'll ALL be checked out again tomorrow.
Because of high demand, OV-fiets are only available to people who are registered transit users.

Last week I visited BikeFlip in Rotterdam. They share a warehouse with Buurman, a lumber company that specializes in rescued & reused street tree wood.
Most boards are beautiful hardwood that come from wind-fall trees. Boards each have a description of the location and time they were acquired.
