I post so much about how wonderful life is in Utrecht for people outside of cars that you might think cars don't exist here.

They do! But cars are controlled in Utrecht.

Here's a long line of cars waiting to get into an underground parking garage for big fall sales at the shopping mall.

On this beautiful fall day it's easy to imagine old Utrecht from centuries ago. The sounds of shoppers, dogs, churchbells, children, bikes. The Havendienst (port service) barge delivering beer to canal-side taverns.

It's harder to imagine cars here just a few decades ago.

A few months ago, a friend visited me in Utrecht. As we biked around to do daily errands, she kept saying, "This is like a dream. This is like a dream."

I do believe all cities the world over to soon come to their senses, limit car movement, and build a dream of safe, abundant streets for people.

This is the SMALL bike parking garage next to Utrecht Centraal Station. Free for 24 hours. With a bike repair shop, a few hundred OVfiets rental bikes, and a 24/7 secure, staffed parking lot for 4,200 bikes.

The new lot on the other side of the station holds 11,500 bikes.
