Shared mobility is changing how we move in cities.

Vélib’ recorded 48 million trips in Paris last year. More and more cities now offer shared bikes. This makes cycling an convenient and flexible choice for many living and working in the city.

The new Stadttunnel bicycle parking facility in Zurich offers 1,240 parking spaces.

Located inside a 440-metre-long bicycle tunnel beneath Zürich Central Station, it is equipped with Abel Sensors’ SmartParking technology.

Seen from above, the Kniphoekbrug in Houten is a simple, well-designed link in the town’s cycling network. It offers an easy, pleasant route over the water, showing how good infrastructure makes everyday cycling straightforward and enjoyable.

Before and after: 5 years ago, Utrecht restored the Catharijnesingel.

Once filled in during the 1970s to make way for traffic, the historic canal now flows again around the old city, lined with pedestrian paths, bike lanes, and a park-like landscape.

This week, the city of Haarlem lowered the speed limit from 50 to 30km/h for 132 roads in the city. We sat down with experts from Gemeente Haarlem about the change and how they made it happen.

In the Netherlands, you will often see paths such as this one. Separated, wide, and surrounded by greenery. By making cycling infrastructure safe and enjoyable, it is less of a hurdle to travel by bike.

Why do cycle bridges matter?

Cycle bridges create safe, direct routes for people on bikes, especially across busy roads, railways, or waterways. They remove conflict points with motor traffic, reducing the risk of collisions and making cycling more enjoyable for everyone.

This bright blue bicycle bridge, along with a nearby tunnel, offer a convenient north-south link across the railway tracks and form part of the city's 'Blaue Band' (Blue Ribbon) cycling route.

Burg Reigerstraat in Utrecht is a fietsstraat, a cycling street where bikes have priority and cars are considered guests. By keeping speeds low and designing the street to feel comfortable for riders of all ages, it creates a calmer, safer environment that encourages active travel.

We all find cycling happiness in different ways.

2025 marks 50 years of @fietsersbond.nl – half a century of representing the rights, safety, and comfort of cyclists across the Netherlands. In honor of this milestone a video was made about cycling happiness.

Accessibility is about both removing physical and language barriers to make mobility welcoming and comfortable.

In the Province of Friesland, recognising part of the cultural identity is Frisian language, traffic signs will become bilingual in 2026.

"How can men help women feel safer cycling at night?"

Social designers Lisa Strijbosch and Maartje de Goede in partnership with the @Fietsersbond.nl created the 'Mannenstoplicht' to encourage men to voluntarily stop and reflect on their role in nightlife."

Dutch cycling is a constant work-in-progress to help eliminate gaps in the network.

In Haarlem a €75-million grant from the national governments to build a new cycling bridge will connect two major cycling routes while improving access to the nearby station.
