This #CleanAirNight I’ve been out popping posters on community noticeboards, railings outside healthcare centres, parks and local streets, and shops selling wood - simply to raise awareness.

Inspired by @freedomtodoubt.bsky.social’s brilliant post, I wanted to share my own experience of learning about the dangers of wood smoke.

It started a few years ago with a message on our street WhatsApp.

Sadly many people have wood burners and don’t know the risks.
The tiny particulates are very damaging to health. (I got rid of mine several years ago after reading about the dangers.)
I often smell smoke in the air on a still night in West Worthing

Supporting #CleanAirNight in RB Kingston. #Surbiton is worst place in UK for air pollution according to IQAir study & high rates of stove ownership according to UCL wood burner map. Awareness raising in the media has reduced #woodsmoke a bit, but more campaigning is needed! @mumsforlungs.bsky.social

Friendly, understood importance of this project, & despite the admitted irony that they sell logs (Kiln-dried all!), were fully onboard with the dangers of any air pollution & allowed immediate display of the poster in their window. What absolute community ⭐⭐⭐

Welcome to Hove on #CleanAirNight & more specifically the shopping hub 7 Dials that despite being well served with a great & frequent bus service, on most days is stuffed w private cars, & quite a few diesel SUVs.
Here goes, I thought, get these posters onto as many shop windows as you can. 🧵1/7

Thanks to Alex in #Isleworth for putting up our posters in her local GP surgery and community centre, and for chatting to Hounslow Fire Brigade about #WoodBurning. Burning wood and smokeless fuel makes our air dirty and harms #Health. #CleanAirNight @lfb-hounslow.bsky.social

DEFRA has just published a consultation on solid fuel burning. We're happy to see a long-term campaign ask addressed - warning labels on stoves. However, the proposals will only impact future emissions; they will do nothing to help all those affected by existing burning. #CleanAirNight #WoodBurning
New wood-burning stoves to carry health warnings in UK plan
Pollution from wood burners kills thousands but proposed emissions limit would cut toxic particles by 9%

Thanks for taking part in our #CleanAirNight poster campaign Chloe. Much more needs to be done about #WoodBurning in the UK.

How can replacing fireplaces and older stoves with modern Ecodesign wood burning stoves, help provide cleaner air, when the NAEI data clearly shows that 22 pollutants of 53, would be higher?

It’s #CleanAirNight! Did you know that wood burning is the most polluting way to heat your home? Wood burning smoke produces fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5), which enters your bloodstream when inhaled and can cause heart & lung disease, as well as increase your risk of diabetes and dementia

Huge thanks to our volunteers for putting up these posters to help shine a light on the uncomfortable facts about #WoodBurning. Here's a selection from London, Sheffield and Manchester. Can you think twice about burning? #CleanAirNight

It's #CleanAirNight. Can you rethink burning, tonight and beyond?

Wood burning creates tiny particles of pollution (including soot and carbon) that lodge deep in our bodies and make us sick. This doesn't just affect the household burning, but their neighbours, too.

How much #AirPollution is created when you burn wood?

👉 Defra approved/#Ecodesign stove = 400 times more polluting than a gas boiler.
👉 Open fire = 4000 times more polluting than a gas boiler.

Please think twice about burning if you don't need to.
