Just days ago, Brad Lander called me to interpret for an Arabic-speaking asylee whose case was approved, yet ICE was still harassing him inside the building. Brad personally escorted him out to safety. He does this kind of work quietly, every day.
Lander just got detained by federal agents as he tried to escort a man out of the courtroom. Lander was taken in an elevator with masked agents, along with one member of his NYPD security detail.

I still can't get past the idea that people in America are now supposed to accept that this is a valid form of law enforcement and just assume it's fine when random dudes in groups with face-coverings, no ID, no warrant, & no uniform grab people off the street and force them into unmarked vehicles
Not an original point but worth saying again - there is not a single element in this picture that identifies any of these folks as law enforcement agents. No badges, no uniforms, no vests. Out of context it just looks like a bunch of random guys are kidnapping a mayoral candidate.
Breaking News: Brad Lander, the New York City comptroller who is running for mayor, was detained by ICE agents at an immigration court as he tried to escort a migrant out of the courthouse to prevent his arrest. nyti.ms/4jWkANE

Re-upping this:
Re: U.S. CECOT detainees, the main q is NOT 'did they ever allegedly commit a crime?'

Rather: Is the US allowed to deliver them into lifetime imprisonment in a notorious Salvadoran prison camp without charge, trial, sentencing, or consideration of international/asylum/anti-torture law?

Clearly no!

just absolutely insane that this is what Trump accused Biden of doing, and now he's done it himself.
Congratulations, North Carolina. You’re on your own and your FEMA request is “not warranted.”

covid threw into high relief how many working class people are absolutely necessary to keeping society functional, and rather than that sparking a renewed commitment to an economy that rewards such workers, we've seen an elite backlash against even modest increases in their market power

Yet another example to add to the pile of Trump openly saying he doesn’t know much of anything about what his government is doing.
REPORTER: You just announced a new nominee for US Surgeon General who never finished her residency, and is not a practicing physician. So can you explain why you picked her to be America's top doctor?

Just thinking fondly of the years FIRE and other free speech warriors spent trying to whip up a panic about “self censorship” among conservative professors.
What its like to be a faculty member in Florida, elsewhere, and maybe your local university soon. Racists try to entrap you into saying something that the Governor has deemed is grounds for dismissal, or make false claims.
Free speech on campus is clearly declining.

This is a proposal for nursing home residents to wait hours for someone to change a soiled diaper.

This is a proposal for people to go days on end without leaving bed.

This is a proposal for poor infection control that kills.

This is too often the status quo. This bill would keep it in place.
Let me run down some other things in the bill:
• 9-year delay of the Biden safe staffing rule that ensured a minimum amount of nurses per nursing home resident.
So they're paying for tax cuts by cutting down on who watches your grandma.
🚨NEWS: I've obtained a list of the Medicaid cuts in the Republican reconciliation package.
The big one is that they're going to raise premiums and co-pays on beneficiaries at or above the federal poverty line ($15,650 for single people, $21,150 for a couple).
That's what helps pay for the tax cuts.

This gets papered over as old man yelling at clouds but this is impeachable by itself. Greenland is our ally which has allowed a continual U.S. military presence since WWII, including a vital part of our missile defense and space surveillance. Threatening them is unacceptable.
Q: "Would you rule out military force to take Canada?"

Trump: "I think we're not going to ever get to that point. Something could happen with Greenland, I'll be honest."

Q: "You are not ruling out military force to take Greenland?"

Trump: "I don't rule it out."

When Fox smears Abrego Garcia as MS-13 while citing a murder committed by a different migrant, they're only making the case for giving him due process stronger. The whole point of due process is to determine who is guilty of such crimes and who isn't!

“Contrary to U.S. law and long-established Constitutional rights…”. I know it gets boring to say every time, but that really belongs in the headline for claims like this.
President Trump asserted on Tuesday that undocumented immigrants should not be entitled to trials, insisting that his administration should be able to deport them without appearing before a judge.
Trump Says Undocumented Immigrants Shouldn’t Get Trials Before Deportation
The president claimed that countries were sending their prisoners to the United States and that he needed to bypass the constitutional demands of due process to expel them quickly.

PREA's lead sponsor was Jeff Sessions, and conservative evangelicals like Chuck Colson whipped support for it. The law has huge enforcement issues, but it was a genuine recognition that our prisons shouldn't be barbaric.
The Prison Rape Elimination Act passed Congress unanimously in 2003. It requires audits of every prison and jail in the US and technical support for efforts to end carceral rape.

Without funding, this doesn't happen.

Appalling. Not surprising. But absolutely appalling.
