There’s a word we used to say. They don’t let you say it anymore, but I think it’s a beautiful word. We call it: dialectic. You have the thesis, and then the antithesis, and if you put them together it’s a synthesis. Very powerful. We’ll be looking into that. Very materialist, the theory of history
TRUMP [after spending 5 minutes with Zohran]: surplus value, it’s a very wonderful thing, very wonderful, and they’re stealing it. Can you believe that?

We’re going to be looking very strongly at the bourgeoisie, what they’re up to

me, seeing this post out of context: yeah I bet it is difficult to get monkeys to form a government
like, because it’s so hard to start and conduct these monkey studies, scientists generally don’t do them unless absolutely necessary, especially in government

Look, if you are trailing a budget and then immediately walking it back, before trailing an asylum bill and immediately walking it back, then you are just bad at politics and policy. There are no redeeming features here.

We aren’t obligated to suppress our own beliefs to help make deeply cynical political strategies work
Labour is going to introduce safe routes for those claiming refugee status while everybody here is talking about ‘jewellery theft’ proposals. I strongly suspect the latter was meant to divert Sun readers’ attention from clocking the former while you are meant to be welcoming the former. 🫤

sorry I just refuse to engage with this in a "the policy is unworkable and it won't shift the polls!" framing - it is morally bankrupt and frankly evil, no further analysis required

morality isn't a failing and there is no excuse for leaning on performative cruelty as a polling aid
The Sun has been told Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will on Monday propose confiscating jewellery, watches, necklaces from asylum seekers to meet asylum costs

This reflects the most controversial aspect of the Danish scheme - the Jewellery Law. The toughest Labour MPs thought this was OTT

MACSWEENEY: let's assume for a moment that you are a rudderless politician with no clear worldview or strategy

STARMER: assume away
Correctly, I think the Labour Party is best understood as the performance of a centre left political party put on by several political strategists but (unwittingly) in a manner akin the producers.

why wait - I said something would take 6/7 days in a standup last week and one of my colleagues automatically did the thing, because he has preteen children and behavioural conditioning through repetition is strong
Now I'm picturing a group of bored middle-aged people 30 years from now all doing a half-hearted 6-7 in a business meeting because that's just what you do

a real insight into the British psyche is that the median voter almost certainly simultaneously thinks fly tippers should go to jail & would flat out refuse to ever pay enough to cover a legitimate waste collection
Prime example of why the contract between the public and the police is breaking down, regardless of long term crime trends. Thames Valley Police don’t even think it’s their job to investigate this. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I know it’s always like this. But one striking thing from the budget kite flying and kite pulling back in, is how major policy decisions are constantly being buffeted around by iterative forecast changes.
All feels a bit of a silly way to be making major economic policy & political decisions.

"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

There might be some truth in this, but I think it understates the government’s achievement, which is to have synthesised the worst aspects of all three of the Blairite, Old Right, and Soft Left traditions
I voted for Ed Miliband and I'd do it again, but I think it is important to be realistic and accept that this goverment's instincts are basically Milibandist. A particularly unserious version of Milibandism, but Milibandism nevertheless.
