This is interesting — a recent study of mode share (the % share of transportation trips by car, transit, walking, biking etc) relative to city size and income levels in almost 800 cities in 61 countries. Interesting results. HT @davidzipper.bsky.social

Trigger warning.

“In crashes, SUVs are more likely to strike vital organs in the core of adults’ bodies & heads of children. Hitting pedestrians above their center of gravity means they’re more likely to be knocked forward & down and then be driven over.”

Plus more likely to hit in the 1st place.

The American car industry quite deliberately designs its products so that they kill people. They know this. They are not ignorant of how their products work.

They don't care.

I wonder if there’s also an element that in bending over backwards to avoid affecting drivers those « carrots » come with conflicts between other modes ? Cutting trees to build non-continuous mobility lanes instead of taking the (ample) road space for a proper continuous one? Dozens of examples
Yet another evidence review argues very strongly that simply providing alternatives to driving doesn't reduce driving

This isn't surprising, if only thanks to habit. If I unthinkingly jump in my car for every trip (as many do), new buses won't change that

If we want to promote certain behaviours we need to reduce the barriers to those behaviours - whether they be financial, structural or administrative. Not necessarily to zero - informed consent is essential - but to a reasonable level that is proportional to the risk.
If the HSE wants more parents to take up the child flu vaccine, they could make the consent form shorter.

It's the flu vaccine.

Absolutely this. But youth mobility is also senior mobility - older people who can’t or don’t want to drive can get around easily. It also supports people with disabilities and those who can’t afford to drive. And even those wedded to their cars might find a walk and fresh air not as bad as feared.
This so much!

Parents (usually mothers) in car-centric areas are forced to chauffeur their kids around. It also means they emphasize predictable, scheduled activities (like sports leagues) that cost money.

Youth mobility gives kids freedom, saves money, and reduces the unpaid-labor burden on women
Just preaching my message of "wanting to do less more often" we all have our reasons.

The most extraordinary part is how successfully these exceptionally high polluters have managed to convince relatively low emitters that climate action is aimed at making them poorer. Especially when climate inaction really is making them poorer while not affecting the Musk’s, Gates’s etc at all.

Every urbanist needs a close friend who navigates the city in a wheelchair/w mobility challenges & a friend who does city life w small children & a friend who does it living w age-related challenges. Understanding these perspectives is vital. If we built for these, it would work for nearly everyone.

The frog is very concerned about the cost of turning off the fire that is slowly boiling his pond even though there’s a gas tap right beside him. He’s only days away from developing high grade insulation or a radical new cooling system and there’ll be no need to invest energy in turning the tap off.
People must understand that don't need to save the planet. It's perfectly capable of saving itself, and will do so by killing ut when we become too much of a nuisance. Extreme weather, higher temperatures, less arable land, water shortages? The planet don't care.
It's just about saving ourselves.
The most insanely frustrating thing about the #ClimateCrisis is how the breakthrough we so clearly need isn’t technological. It’s just a collective willingness, a determination even, to change in ways that would clearly be SO MUCH BETTER than the clear and obvious consequences of NOT changing.

Every time a pundit says ‘woke’ they should be asked to define it. On the spot before anyone can move on with the discussion. Every single time
David Quinn (who else) on Brendan O'Connor show now, dominating the discussion. FG rep says we need to connect with young people. DQ says you need to connect with people like me, he says FG 'too woke'.

Can see where this narrative is heading.

Make space for bicycles on regional bus, says campainers
All regional buses should have spaces for bicycles, according to the Irish Cycling Campaign, a national umbrella group for most cycling campaigns. Bicycles are carried on most intercity buses in Ireland, both public and private, but more recent inter-urban regional buses, which were purchased by the National Transport Authority (NTA) for public service routes, have no bicycle storage. Responding to an NTA examining the requirments of new regional buses, the Irish Cycling Campaign said it has a preference for bicycle storage in "areas within the bus for bicycles with fold up/down seats" so, it says " the space is not wasted if there are no bikes, and a bike can be rolled on and off the bus easily, similar to wheelchairs.
