Have been sent the clip of Bernese Mountain Dog owners sending off Michael D twice by heart-melted people outside of Ireland.
What a country.
What a country.
President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina are preparing to leave Áras an Uachtaráin for the final time this evening as his term comes to an end.
Catherine Connolly will be inaugurated tomorrow as Ireland’s next president.

A question for certain people on the left: how exactly did you think rehabilitating that bald shitstain just because he was on the flotilla would end? Like, what was the expected outcome here?

Social media is a bin fire but the “Christmas Chip, cranberry if you wish but the majority don’t” brings me such joy

This as not simply populism, it's an extreme assault on public institutions and structures. The last week has been about the BBC, but comes alongside mounting attacks on judicial independence/the European Court of Human Rights. Treating each issue in isolation will see them killed off one by one.
What you’re witnessing is a populist assault on the BBC.
This is not an institutional scandal in any meaningful sense of the word. It is an attack on public service broadcasting.

Yes and yet several European countries are embracing a far-right worldview that would burn these policies to the ground, so let’s be not be smug or complacent here - particularly as Mamdani‘s pro-immigration stance is radical by European standards.
Europeans recognize Zohran Mamdani’s supposedly radical policies as ‘normal’ -- Critics of New York City’s mayor-elect have said his pledges of free bus service and universal childcare are unrealistic, but in Europe it’s a given www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

I find it all very ominous
the biggest question: did the former BBC director-general fall on his sword because of fears (either in the corporation or in Westminster) about Trump's wrath

You don’t have to like Tim Divies to think or acknowledge that this is insane and cowardly bowing down to a man who has cut aid that has killed thousands already, bombed ships in international waters and is disappearing people off the streets of the US. It’s just mind bending

The Trump administration is disappearing people left right and center. ICE Holding facilities withholding food and due process, he’s bombing ships in international waters - yet putting together things that he actually said on the 6th of January is a resigning matter. Through the looking glass stuff

Anyone promoting, associating or sharing spaces with this man - what you permit you promote
A genuine embarrassment and national shame that this man is still platformed by our media and in the pro-Palestine movement

Started re reading some of my old Jilly Cooper books to get me back to sleep after night feeds. One of the characters is 11st stone and she describes her as “so big she’d need a trailer to move her”. I read these books as a teenager - vile to put that into peoples heads, really vile

If The Wedding Singer film was released today, it would be set in 2012
The 30 Rock episode with “how do you do, fellow kids?” is closer to the release of Windows 98 than it is to today.
I made a “how do you do, fellow kids?” joke to someone in their mid 20s who, it turns out, was too young to have heard of that meme.
So “how do you do, fellow kids?” is now an example of “how do you do, fellow kids?”

I ache for politics that focuses on making lives better in a relatable insightful way. Vaguely promising “a new Ireland” does fk all for me in that respect btw, I’d still vote for it but sandwiching it with “we need to be suspicious of foreigners and Ukrainians are living it large” kills me inside
I cannot emphasize enough how much Zohran Mamdani's campaign was very much about a platform focused on accountability, but also about having fun, fostering genuine connections with its citizens, and reminding people why they moved to New York City and should still want to live there

I don't earn nearly this much and you know what? I still don't care if folks on benefits live a "better lifestyle". Everyone deserves to live a happy life.
Pure distilled essence of 1979-2025, here. I’m loaded and loving it but somehow I can never shake this mortal terror that somewhere, some poor wanker might be eating a free cheese sandwich.

On year long maternity leave pay from a good job - my income is now below minimum wage - we can get by fine but everything is much more planned, prepped and your world much smaller, these people have no idea how much the conveniences, cars & holidays in their lives cost & how much *time* money buys

My sisters are twins - one v pale, freckled glorious curly hair, looks like someone you’d put on tourism posters to get Americans to visit. The other is so sallow with inky black straight hair and dark brown eyes - when I *think* about the way people used to talk a lot her skin tone it makes me 😵💫
My favourite Hiberno-English-ism isn't any of the obvious ones, it's the fact that when we say "sallow" we mean the opposite of what everyone else means. It's not sickly yellow, it's healthy, positive

My fave genre of Facebook brain rot is v niche, it’s people from the North sharing English nostalgia ‘back in the good old days of the 70s/80s/90s’ posts - which is just so MENTAL when this place was a smoking basket case of paramilitaries, army, murder, bombs & mayhem in those ‘good old days’

Baby cut his 1st tooth, I’ve been getting 1.5hrs sleep at a time max for a few days now, ready to dissolve into the floor with tiredness, then I leaned into the cot and smelled his head - the science of that smell needs studied so it can be replicated - it was reviving in a way I can’t describe
