BBC's Arabic radio service in Lebanon closed after 85 years as part of a £28.5m savings drive. 'Just months later, in October 2023, the Russian state-owned Sputnik news agency took over the frequency. Its news bulletin opened with “This is Moscow”, replacing the previous “This is London” intro.' 🙄

When learning to drive I was having trouble pulling out into slow moving traffic so forced my way and then, as we approached a church on the road, I realised to my horror that my little red AA learner car was part of a funeral procession with waiting mourners gathered.

Southend, my parents’ house. There’s a knock on the door and when I answer some boys on bikes are cycling away.

Knock down ginger. In this cold, in this rain, when they’ve all got toasty homes containing Netflix and the entirety of the internet.

Makes you proud to be British.

Shiver down the spine watching #WinterOlympics and hearing a competitor say that, in Germany, they do skiing in P.E.

Haunting mental images of a 14-year-old Germany version of me being screamed at with “Nobody is going to lunch until Bethany has finished her three sixty spin”.

There was a trailer for ‘The Bride’, the remake of ’The Bride of Frankenstein’, and the man next door said to his partner “looks they’ve remade ’Bonnie and Clyde’” and I’m so tempted to do an ‘Annie Hall’ style Marshall McLuhan style interruption.
Emerald Fennell, I am ready for your close-ups.

My office is near a greetings card shop and on this day every year there‘s a crowd gathered around the Valentines stand, intensely studying each card, and occasionally someone dashes forward to grab one and then there’s a collective “ooh” or appreciative head nod at the choice.
Is there a more excruciating annual experience than buying a Valentine’s Card?

Nothing more disconcerting than when you say something serious and the person doesn’t hear but laughs instinctively, thereby calling into question every time they’ve laughed at one of your jokes in the past.

I used to work with a woman who said she was on a train when Maggie Thatcher stood down and the driver actually stopped the train to announce it to the passengers.
Been on a train in Yorkshire during both the last two prime ministerial resignations and today I am: on a train in Yorkshire, just saying

Very strong GCSE Drama vibes from all these figure skating routines #WinterOlympics
February 8, 2026 at 9:30 PM
If it were me, I’d do an ice skating routine in the style of a woman from Kent who’s slightly drunk on Baileys hot chocolate at Winter Wonderland going round and round the rink nervously and yelling for a man called Darren to hold her hand. #WinterOlympics
Why do the figure skaters have to wear those flimsy glittery outfits? They’re not playing a role. Surely a jumper and jeans would be more practical in that level of cold.

What I want to know is how people get into curling. Are you just out one day with your brush, polishing the ice outside your house, and realise you’ve actually a talent for thereby manipulating local objects
