This is globally true, and not just for climate: for liveable spaces, for the physical health of those around us and for our own mental health. When cities invest in active travel car ownership declines not because cars are banned but because people have better options. They have the choice.
Going car-free is the best thing most people can do for climate. To reduce car dependency, cities should promote car-free living, supporting compact cities through policy, and investing in public transportation, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and shared mobility options.
These key strategies could help Americans get rid of their cars  » Yale Climate Connections

Isn’t it time we changed the language of “sex trafficking”? Instead use “Rape trafficking”. Sex implies consent. There is none. This is rape, coercion and abuse of vulnerable people. Our language should reflect the harm inflicted. Words matter.

There’s so much in this. Firstly the debate around deportation changes utterly when it’s no longer abstract but about friends, neighbours and teammates. Secondly 2.5 years is quick in immigration cases but an age for children who can come to belong in that time. People who move are people first.

I welcome the fact that EV sales are outstripping FFV sales but the photo shows why it’s motornormativity itself that’s the issue.

Fully a third of the pedestrian (which serves wheelchair users, buggies etc too) has been taken for chargers.

Put the car-related street furniture in the road!

Apparently the pedestrian crossing is new, yet it doesn’t appear to be raised up to allow a continuous level path for pedestrians - good practice that also calms the traffic.

Still traffic lights that genuinely prioritise pedestrians - green by default and drivers need to use a begging button … :)
The Cllr is wrong, roundabouts with zebra crossings DO prioritise pedestrians and cyclists, traffic lights never prioritise pedestrians on busy roads like this.

Traffic lights will only see red light breakers.

The question isn't whether people should wear high-viz/helmets. People should wear whatever makes them feel safer. Question is whether mandatory high-viz/helmets is good public policy - it's not

Protected lanes, safe junction design, more cyclists, and better driver behaviour are good public policy
People do wear them. Cyclists know the risks better that anyone. But again.... study after study has shown that while they may help individually in falls, as a whole they drastically discourage people from cycling, they encourage poor behaviour in motorists (who give less room because they...

What a wildly stupid idea.

Mandatory helmets and high viz is a proven remedy to reduce the number of people cycling. It effectively kills off things like Dublin Bikes.

That's why no other EU country does anything like this. Pure madness.

People cycle because it’s safe — by design.

This is what cycling should look like.

Ireland is moving in the opposite direction. Instead of designing safe places to cycle, we're blaming the people cycling...

One of the things that puts people - especially with wheelchairs, mobility devices or buggies - off using the footpath and so can seriously restrict their freedom of movement is drivers parking in pedestrians spaces. Another is the pavement damage caused by those drivers. Pavement parking disables.
To anybody who wants to say there was nobody on the footpath, when I was going back, another motorist drove fowards onto the footpath while 3 old people were walking out from one of the restaurants.

I wasn't going to say anything to any of them parking there but after that I got them to move off.
"Cars don't drive on footpaths"

No, motorists do and 99% of the time I see them doing so there's somewhere else they can park within 30 seconds to a minute or so that's legal, safer and doesn't cause damage to footpaths:

What amazes me is how these « élites » manage to attend so many dinner parties, get to all the secret meetings at the volcano lair and still manage to subvert everything right wing governments want to do and yet keep it all secret from everyone except that annoying guy in the pub who tells everyone.
Goodwin’s semi-conspiracist obsession with dinner parties is a real psychological tic. He imagines that all the fancy “elites” are moving from dinner to dinner talking trash about him (I would actually enjoy that though)
You dont win 'em all! Reform's Matt Goodwin in Sunday Times: 'Most .. people criticising me are nerds. The last thing I want is to be at some dinner party table with Nick Robinson & Mary Beard. *short of mildly inconveniencing drivers, farmers, Michael O’Leary, US tech giants, oil companies or motor manufacturers, of course.
We cannot build our way out of this problem, difficult decisions will need to be made in relation to abandoning properties and land to allow for flooding. We must also stop this obsession with draining agriculture land so quickly.
