Michael D Higgins, with his wife Sabina, has left Áras an Úachtaráin for the final time as president.

He was given a guard of honour by members of the Sanctuary Runners, a charity of which he is patron.

The President’s term of office ends at midnight.

My favourite Hiberno-English-ism isn't any of the obvious ones, it's the fact that when we say "sallow" we mean the opposite of what everyone else means. It's not sickly yellow, it's healthy, positive
sallow (comparative sallower, superlative sallowest) (of skin) Yellowish. (most regions, of light skin) Of a sickly pale colour. (Ireland) Of a tan colour, associated with people from southern Europe or East Asia.

Anyway, I'm bringing this up, because this quasi-religious myth of growth continuing — no matter how hot and chaotic the planet gets — underlies most of the bullshit in the Gates memo, making it hard to recognize as bullshit.

A few years ago, researchers at the University of Chicago's Climate Impact Lab ran a thought experiment: What happens to the number of projected deaths from climate change when you account for the expected economic growth of low-income countries over the rest of this century? The answer: It falls by more than 50 percent. This finding is exciting because it suggests a way forward. Since the economic growth that's projected for poor countries will reduce climate deaths by half, it follows that faster and more expansive growth will reduce deaths by even more. And economic growth is closely tied to public health. So the faster people become prosperous and healthy, the more lives we can save. TRUTH #3: Health and prosperity are the best defense against climate change.

Today feels like a good day to remind everyone that there is literally no empirical evidence that economic growth will just continue if the world heats up to, say, 3°C by 2100.

Continued growth is just *assumed* in every economic model of the relationship between temperatures and growth.

The word "growth" is a core term in the language of climate politics. As we just saw, climate economists estimate the costs of climate damages relative to the amount of economic growth they project into the twenty-first century, and by and large they assume that such growth will continue no matter how hot and chaotic the planet gets. Their belief in a future of continued economic growth enables another idea sometimes used to justify sustaining the fossil- fuel economy: the idea that economic growth is itself a climate-change solution, a form of environmental protection that will shield the prosperous from climate devastation. This belief is so bipartisan, so ubiquitous, that it's not quite accurate to call it propaganda. It's best understood as a *myth*. This myth is often taken for reality by both fossil-fuel partisans on the right and climate-conscious progressives on the center-left.

The new UNEP Emissions Gap Report points out that "no NDCs set targets to reduce oil and gas production or trim inefficient fossil fuel subsidies".

That countries are not addressing fossil fuels - at the heart of the climate crisis - is deeply worrying.

Last week at a Brussels thinktank conference I heard the US openly referred to as "our former ally".

This week we learn that the US climate delegation is going around threatening to put European climate negotiators on the US sanctions list if they don't agree to wreck our climate.

The USDA is the fail safe for SNAP.

They have a contingency fund to ensure it’s covered in the event of a shutdown.

They’re refusing.

Grocery stores stepped up to try and help by offering discounts to any SNAP recipients and the USDA told them they had to stop.

Starvation as a policy choice.

As the sun came up, we were joined by canvassers, labor leaders, elected officials, and working people — a movement to bring a new day to our city.
