'Granted, if our problem were orcs or the Dark Lord Sauron or something, then it would be easier to sympathise with Martin’s insistence that he is not Gandalf. Until then, it seems fair enough to ask for some semblance of a real, timely solution.'

This week's column is about Magic Wand Micheál.

Magic Wand Micheál is the kind of nickname that could finish a politician if it really stuck.

Can't remember where I heard this recently, but I thought it was great. And by 'kids' they were referring to people 25 and under.

"The job of a kid is to make mistakes.

It is the job of the rest of us to not take advantage of that"

hard to think of a better example of "you may not believe in class war, but billionaires know they're in one" than this
This is bleak: Jes Staley, currently CEO of Barclays, reassuring Epstein that popular revolt against financial elites is unlikely because capitalism and pop culture have defanged social movements, leaving people more invested in consumption than justice.

'His racism is not due to dementia'

Of course not.

But his dementia is absolutely why he doesn't know to try & hide it anymore
1. It was not an accident.
2. It was not a staffer.
3. While the president may have dementia his racism is not due to dementia.
4. He isn’t sorry. He means every racist thought he shares.
5. His base agrees with him.
6. He will do it again.
7. No one in power will hold him accountable.

They've deleted it. Alls well that ends well.
People have been saying, for months now, that there will come a time when the dementia becomes too advanced.

It is a matter of time before he says, or does, something so bad that they will have no choice but to remove him.

We are hurtling, at incredible speed, towards that day.

We dodged a bullet there. Which is ironic.

It is nothing short of impressive that, in revealing the information, they managed to make it worse.
Why are the men’s names redacted and the victims names exposed?

I think my favourite thing about this clip where HC explains that current legislation is unfair to victims is that after she explains it, Michael Martin almost chides her and explains that her words are, in fact, very unfair on the government. The real victims.
The use of victims' counselling notes in trials for sexual offences is grotesque – yet the govt's new legislation doesn't ban the practice.

The Taoiseach says an outright ban is unconstitutional – the Social Democrats don't accept that excuse.

The govt needs to act stronger on this.

Shocking but unfortunately true
“The idea that we would give priority to not standing up to big tech over the generation and sharing of child abuse material, it’s an absolutely shocking and reprehensible assertion,” insists Micheál Martin.

I was wearing hi vis when a motorist drove into me. Passengers in the car got out to tell me the driver was really upset because she didn't see me. I didn't have much sympathy as I was picking gravel out of my hands.

I was visible. She didn't look.

What a wildly stupid idea.

Mandatory helmets and high viz is a proven remedy to reduce the number of people cycling. It effectively kills off things like Dublin Bikes.

That's why no other EU country does anything like this. Pure madness.

I was knocked off my bike in broad daylight by a driver who I suspect was texting. The Gardaí wouldn’t attend the scene (because I wasn’t hurt enough) and didn’t respond to my Traffic Watch report. The issue isn’t hi-vis jackets.

A lot said on this already but what I find interesting is the slow motion mass realisation among men that after years of being led around by bad actors like Rogan et al. the romantic marketplace has unanimously opted to blacklist them and now they're panicking. No amount of podcasts will fix that.
📢 “A huge amount of men between the age of 15 and 50 will not pass on their genes. They will effectively die out of the gene pool ... Should society intervene?” Steven Bartlett asked last year.
Two top podcasters have identified a global decline. The problem, they say, is women

OK. Cool. So, can I blame men because I never had kids? Should society have intervened to insist some guy had kids with me?

Never 'passing on your genes' instead of saying never got to 'have a family' is telling

This is the way the world has ALWAYS been

I think the world will be ok without them.
