Figured I should make a thread collecting my doily posts.

These are all knit by me, mostly from designs by Herbert Niebling, a prolific designer from the early 20th century.

Check out his Wikipedia page (which I also created!) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert...

This is a hyper-specific comparison that is 100% accurate.

Trump is a mix of the geriatric self aggrandizement of Leonid Brezhnev, and the sexual history of Lavrentiy Beria.

"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

How quickly people have forgotten about Dennis Hastert.
They still use, obey, and talk about "The Hastert Rule" in the House. Just in case you thought all this "GOP is the Party of Pedophiles" is new. He was Speaker of the House for 8 years.

And we knew this. This wasn't speculation. We studied it, we had the talking points. We trained volunteers to explain this to people. It's not a surprise. Rich people don't flee places with good quality of life when we increase the quality of life. They might try to cheat us, but they don't leave.
NEW: The first two years of Massachusetts' millionaire tax has raised $3 billion more than expected.

And rather than driving the rich away, IPS researchers found that the number of millionaires has *increased.*

One thing to keep in mind, going into the holidays shopping season: huge corporations can offer deep discounts because they never intended to sell items at full price anyway- prices were always grossly inflated to make big discounts look like Deals. It’s built into their marketing.

There's this woman doing an absolutely wild social experiment on TikTok. She calls random US churches with the sound of a baby crying in the background, explain the baby hasn't eaten in over 12 hours, and asks for 1 bottle of baby formula. She has a public spreadsheet of how each one responded. 1/3

This could be another example for @gretchenmcc.bsky.social 's ongoing series of novel and bizarre sentences that speakers of a language are nevertheless able to understand perfectly well.
Imagine trying to convince someone a decade ago that this sentence would be a 100% literally accurate description of the American political situation.
The attorney general and the FBI director, a manosphere podcaster bro, pulled into the situation room a member of Congress best known for getting kicked out of a Beetlejuice musical for drunkenly giving her date a handy, in order to pressure her about the president's child sex trafficking scandal.

Let's talk about why "just spell it how it sounds" is actually not straightforward, especially for a large language like English. The big questions are: "How it sounds" when spoken*by whom*? And who gets to choose?

#linguistics
Incidentally, this is why I’m against strict spelling. Words should be spelled the way they sound & we spell words as if we’re speaking Middle English for ridiculous class reasons

In ME you’d pronounce the k in “knight” but some dumbass needed to prove he was cool & now we have a literacy problem
ever since I learned about three-cueing I've developed infinitely more patience for replies on social media. mfers literally do not know how to read. people are walking around conjuring random meanings into words they don't know, and they don't know a lot of words. it's crazy

Today is a good day to remember, and to say, that the #MeToo movement was right, and was righteous, and has been vindicated over and over again. There was no overreach. There was no excess. There was no they-went-too-far.

So much work remains to be done.

Friendly reminder that dishwashers made after 1995 or so are so water and energy efficient that even if you ran them twice fully loaded it would still use less water than handwashing the same load.

So many "green" things feel like sacrifices. Dishwashers are not one of them.
