At this year's @lingcomm.bsky.social conference, we learned that the UK has been celebrating National Linguistics Day on November 26th, and everyone immediately went, hey, can't we make that World Linguistics Day?
Well, now it's only 20 days away, so time to get your celebration plans in order!

Just been reminded that on this day in 1990 I landed in Kuwait.
Was immediately detached to scout and recon to add comms and linguistics support. When somebody asked why we needed linguistics, the XO said "because you win wars by making friends, not by making corpses. Safeties on, gentleman".

can you imagine a world where the currently-present influence of tolkienesque fantasy was in its fascination with linguistics or even like, the latter-years interest tolkien took in evaluating his writing through the lens of a subjective mythology and pseudohistorical account

New paper alert!
In my newest paper, which has just appeared in Discourse, Context & Media, I analyse how people living with dementia use conceptual metaphor to construct self and their condition and as a tool for sense-making for dementia-induced changes

A confounding thing for the linguistics of LMs: the best way to assess their grammatical ability is string probability. Yet string probability and grammaticality are famously not the same!
Really excited to have this out, where we give a formal account, w/ experiments, of how to make sense of that!

New work to appear @ TACL!
Language models (LMs) are remarkably good at generating novel well-formed sentences, leading to claims that they have mastered grammar.
Yet they often assign higher probability to ungrammatical strings than to grammatical strings.
How can both things be true? 🧵👇

This should interest people in #linguistics
Recently, Gašper Beguš and his team put several large language models through a litany of tests — including having them generalize the rules of a made-up language. Most failed to match human linguistic ability. But one LLM greatly exceeded expectations. www.quantamagazine.org/in-a-first-a...

I had a short-lived phase where I tried to make "castle" a modifier for "excellent," like adding "way" in front of "cool." It turns out that changing linguistics by yourself is hard and you have to try for more than two days.
"An excellent castle." *Chef Excellence jingle* 🎶
"Well I don't think it's very excellent at all, hmmph!"
"But Princess..."
