What gets me is that fanfic/fanart creators have been talking about the subject of getting dogpiled, harassed, and pressured *for so many years now* about making dark/unsettling content, and let nobody listened to the canary in the coal mine because “stupid fandom drama”
alternatively we as a society could realize that fiction is about playing with dolls and that horrible things happening to them doesn't matter because it's all toys.

but that seems more complicated than just bringing back big box PC games and publishing books alongside them

I've been posting about this game on and off for several months for a reason. :V

I can't wait to see all the discourse about "moe."

This kind of stuff is why I've come to believe that trigger warnings do more harm than good. I've seen them weaponized as a list of actionable items too often to not be bothered by it. Creators should not be put on the defensive to justify their work like this.
"oh it shows abuse, it shows sexual violence, it shows this, it shows that" you are simply not qualified to even begin to participate in an adult conversation about this. be quiet and drink your chocolate milk

On that last point, as someone who bought a $230 USD Sega CD in its time, it's hard to express just how puzzling it was to finally play Night Trap.

"That's it???"
To clarify, there's nothing in this game that wouldn't pass muster in an M-rated film.

There are people spreading malicious rumors about it, claiming that it is more extreme.

It reminds me of Night Trap, supposedly one of the most transgressive games of its age. Reality: Milder than Power Rangers.
Humble's now banned it too, post-launch:

Pundits and consultants still pretend to not understand why--despite Trump's historical unpopularity--everybody hates to vote for Democrats.
Hillary Clinton blames TikTok and “totally made up” videos for young people’s views on Israel and Palestine.

She says social media influenced “not just the usual suspects” but also “young Jewish Americans who don’t know the history and don’t understand.”

I kind of love this, no sarcasm.
Just did a test of the new Mario Kart World patch and I think Nintendo really outdid themselves this time.

This meta of "ITS BAD" videos about games blows man. As a lifelong hater, this deep level of hating is exhausting mainly because I know it's not from a place of genuine critique, it's never a discussion for wanting things to be better, it's just being negative to generate clicks. Absolute shite

This is basically one of the reasons why the "Bluesky users don't understand jokes lol" dunk doesn't really land with me.

Your sarcasm doesn't travel as well as you think it does and "it's just jokes bro lol" isn't a good excuse.
don't like the thing we (online transsexuals) do where once we decide someone is sufficiently bad, we start a libel cycle where one person cracks a joke and the next person takes that joke literally and now everyone thinks that a guy who said something stupid is actually definitely a sexual predator

One of the most amusing aspects of the Android saga is how Vegeta is clearly demonstrated to be a bigger threat to humanity than the androids.

Villain protagonists are fun.
dragon ball is different to other shonen manga in that it never really redeems its villains or makes them sympathetic it instead just believes that if you grindset hard enough you just kinda stop caring about being evil

To me this may as well be a flashing neon sign that says "never play our game."

Not like I'm actively playing fighters right now anyway, but if I was looking for one, the absolute last one I'd pick would be one that threatens to throw out all of my work on a monthly basis.

So "A/B Testing" has to be the most irritating "feature" YouTube has rolled out in a minute.

I'm already sick of seeing old videos with randomized thumbnails clogging up my recommended feed trying to trick me into clicking them again.

Mickey Mania for Genesis / Mega Drive is region-locked. However, the lock screen will keep re-checking the console's region setting and will change its message if it detects that the console is changed to the correct region.

It is only possible to see this on a hardware-modded console or emulator.

While it's true you can't fully trust player opinions on balance for this reason, devs in charge of game tuning must also realize that data lies too.

Balance isnt real. Only the perception of balance is. It's all vibes. Balance isnt a viable OR desirable goal. You want fun, variety, and retention.
One of the producers on Guilty Gear Strive said it was basically impossible to source player feedback on balance changes online because nobody had original opinions and would just parrot what the most popular content creators said and so they had to rely on data and I think about that every day.

I like the US soundtrack for Sonic CD well enough, but when I see things like this my reflex is to ask "why did they bother?" If it was a case that their US musicians wanted to showcase their work but didn't have a US-made game to put it in, then the decision to replace the JP soundtrack makes sense
Sonic CD US Metallic Madness is mostly just riffing on top of this sequence preset from Korg Wavestation

I only finally got around to completing the original Doom this year, and the single most surprising thing that stuck with me afterward was that this frequently-memed GamePro blurb came across significantly less stupid after finally playing through the game.

The Cyberdemon takes a lot of hits.

the “thanksgiving food is bad” discourse raises its ugly head every year, but the truth remains that thanksgiving food can be amazing as long as you know how to cook. the problem is we’re throwing a few million sunday drivers directly into a grand prix
I think this is unfair to turkey. turkey is good but hard to cook well because it is so damn big. turkey *parts* are great but lack the esthetic appeal of a centerpiece bird.

imo this is the frame that makes sense for understanding why, 3 years before a primary, there are ALREADY people yelling at you about supporting newsom. it’s not about supporting the eventual nominee. it’s about establishing right here and right now that the party won’t be an opposition to fascism
they’re just using the threat of fascism to bludgeon you into accepting their limp dicked non-opposition and protection of the status quo

One obnoxious thing about game discussion is how little of it is about the games

Remembering forums where there'd be more buzz around the trailers than any post-launch discussion, or the lamentation of lack of dev "support" (things to blow more money on) instead of just playing/discussing the games
Part of the reason I find most discussion/the hype cycle of GTA6 uninteresting because almost none of it is about the game itself.

Its about games that have to move around it, its about how much it can get away costing, its about how it will affect the industry. Not gameplay or narrative.
GTA 6 will be released in 1 year from today

… unless it’s delayed again.

I’ve been biting my nail at journalism as a whole because a large ratio of the space today is done by people who never took a class on infosec, ethics, writing, and/or general protocol, it’s a lot of amateurs cosplaying as journalists who just want to put low quality words/video out on the internet.
I used to complain about "games journalism" a lot before gamergate poisoned that entire discourse, mostly because it was PR for publishers with little real news. Since it is imploding and folks are going independent, we can now judge them without the context of corporate overlords.

It's still dire.

THIS is a placeholder asset. Placeholder assets are supposed to be obvious. Any studio claiming ai placeholder assets just slipped through is lying. They just hoped nobody would notice.

My favorite random fact about Super Metroid is that its in-game map is literally the only "negative" cited about the game in its EGM review.
My only Metroid opinion is that the original Metroid is not only playable but fun. Extremely controversial. There's no map or the game pointing you to where you need to go next or decades of quality of life innovations that iterated off of its core design. And if you don't like it? That's fine.

Simply, an interactive medium needs to allow for experimentation, expression, and consequence. If your instinct as a designer is to reflexively sand off those edges then I'm not sure why you're making video games instead of movies.
friday soapbox: as a designer, if you want something to be a skillful action for players, and you want growth in this skill to be very deep/meaningful, then you need to also let players be bad at it. sometimes horrendously bad. players hate this pain, and designers often want to mitigate it away.
