one thing i think a lot these days wrt games crit is what is even the value of a game being good. obviously the value is i like it, find it rewarding, all those things. but i dont actually think there's much inherent value in it beyond that and we should be more honest about that

playing some heretic. pretty good. slower paced than doom and with bigger levels that feel less mazelike but more like tiny metroidvania dungeons. at least in episode 1 idk they might get crazy after the shareware one lol

what are good examples of games that were a big deal at the time but have seemingly faded into, if not obscurity, then just a lesser profile than you’d expect. my go to is probably escape from butcher bay. kids don’t know there was a riddick game and it was legit

still mostly lurking before diving in but i have to say i am a bit confused by doom gameplay mods. there’s so many and they change so much but very few of them seem to have like. levels?? there’s a couple TCs and occasionally some have recommended wads but they seem to be the minority
