It always amused me how many weirdly specific elements and narrative beats were mirrored between Unreal and Metroid Prime. I'm sure there are even more similarities I forgot about (and yeah, I know about the Brinstar reference Alexander Brandon put in the soundtrack).

Put an extra NVME SSD in my newly bought prebuilt PC today and what should have been a straightforward procedure turned into over 3 hours of kafkaesque computer surgery. It's unbelievable how complicated slotting in a tiny card can be. Constantly terrified of breaking something along the way.

Nanao should be in more games

Tech discourse in games is so weird when the contemporary talk you see during development or release is "modern hardware is amazing and the sky is the limit!", but when talking about the same game retroactively it's always "ah, but these decisions were made due to the limited technology of the time"

It feels like every time I peruse some mildly interesting looking 2D sidescroller on Steam, I read the description up until the point that it mentions Sekiro/parry gameplay whereupon I turn around and walk away. It's kind of absurd how pervasive this specific trend has become.

I have been trying to get into No Man's Sky for the first time over the past few days, but it's really hard to get over just how impressively poor the UX is. It's very rare that I ever actually feel like I'm learning how something works throughout the UI tutorials. Huge obstacle to enjoying the game

The most baffling thing about Sega Channel is how an earlier prototype used the original Sonic 2 sprite for the intro animation, but later on they redrew the frames to look significantly worse for some reason. There's a sheet directly comparing the versions on Spriter's Resource.

Someone legit made an entire scene-for-scene live action recreation of Another World/Out of this World. My only disappointment is that the alien costumes don't resemble the honey puff monster which I always imagined them to look like

This is certainly one way to make horror soundscapes.

"We have Distorted Reality at home."

This is such a weirdly specific hangup to have, but I am pleasantly surprised that the upcoming RTS D.O.R.F is one of the only proper isometric games to actually feature 90 degree road tiles instead of having everything conform to the typical 4 angles. I dare you to try and find any other examples.

Adventures in cursed retro aesthetics: PBR Doom but in the original resolution and 256 colors. Basically: "What if we had PBR and modern lighting in 1993 but were still limited to 200p and the original game palette?"

The reason why the date of Geese's death in the Fatal Fury 1 ending is always in the early 1900s is not due to some typical localization screwup. It is based on the Neo Geo BIOS clock which wraps back to 1900 after the turn of the century. Neo Geo has the dreaded Y2K bug.
i was going through my X archives and found this by @superpodsaga.com, which I qrt'd at some point years ago

so, let me bring the question back: what is the most useless piece of video game knowledge you know?

As is tradition with the pop culture influencing Gen X developers in the 90s, the internal video filename for the ion cannon FMV in Command & Conquer is simply called "akira.vqa"

The Quake 1 axe sound is just the Metal Hit sound from Korg M1, and the signature grenade bounce is in fact the same sound nearly 2 octaves lower.

I've always assumed the fireball works the way it does in Super Mario Land because they gave up programming any semblance of gravity physics for them. No idea if that was the actual reason or if there's an explicit design reason for it.

Sonic CD US Metallic Madness is mostly just riffing on top of this sequence preset from Korg Wavestation

Nothing makes me not want to support an audio company quite like having a plugin UX acting like a glorified storefront deceiving you by presenting presets (alongside the ones you actually own) you don't even have full access to. There's so much annoying friction like this in Addictive Drums 2.

The FL Studio sampler getting an offset knob is a relatively recent addition but an extremely welcome one. By automating it with a random LFO signal you can add a degree of humanization to any kind of repeated oneshot sample.
