ATL retro game / FGC guy.
I only finally got around to completing the original Doom this year, and the single most surprising thing that stuck with me afterward was that this frequently-memed GamePro blurb came across significantly less stupid after finally playing through the game.

The Cyberdemon takes a lot of hits.

"Passion" is one way to put it yeah.

If you're gonna be bad, you should at least strive to be memorable.

Just some Picross.

I was gonna insist that this had to be a typo, but I just looked it up. Sheesh. Being a child at the time just makes time feel like it was more spread out than it was.

This certainly ranks among the most out-of-pocket concepts I've seen for a video game.

Interesting that they briefly had Deion Sanders as the cover athlete. Probably because they used him for double duty on their contemporary NFL games.

One of these days I need to do a proper dive on those arcade games with things like dedicated bunt levers and whatnot.

Same as "it's only cheating if you're caught."

And tbh, if anything's driven this point home over the past 10 years, it's been the feckless opposition to this presidential administration regarding "norms" and the abandonment of the bully pulpit. They just don't want to do the work.

Of all the things in Segagaga, one thing in particular that flew over my head the first time I played it was that the Hong Kong '97 creator is just... there, as a cameo. Maybe he wasn't widely known for that yet?

I wonder what the story behind this is.

Unlockables and in-game progress trackers can be good, but even they sometimes run the risk of becoming rote chores.

What I want is more "SMB3 king messages" and less "Odyssey moon checklist." The former is a neat incentive/bonus that doesn't gate you from anything; the latter is homework.

My favorite variant of this is Mario's Smash 4 trophy using "Donkey Kong Classics" as his debut game instead of Donkey Kong arcade because of the ambiguity regarding that game's rights at that point in time.

But on the plus side, it did give us "Scrimblo Bimblo."

Doug was the ultimate "I'm only watching this because nothing else is on" cartoon. A thoroughly frustrating character, but at the time I assumed it was just written by olds who had long forgotten what it was like to be kids.

I presume you've seen this?

The best wrinkle in this escalation is when the penultimate boss wraps back around to Just A Guy again.

You wrote an article that boils down to "musicians should only aspire to write pop music."

Like, this excerpt is just not great. "The wager" is such an important part of classic arcade game design and there is absolutely zero respect and very little understanding of it expressed here.
