Disillusioned with the world, but probably still slipping friends pages of a novel.
Also, if you don't know something from lived experience, it can be hard to tell how it would affect your life. Do Americans not like walkable cities, or would they just hate being carless in something not that different from their current city?
It’s almost impossible to measure what people prefer in an environment where all kinds of factors influence where and how people live. There’s also an obvious absence of choice in most of the country. I’d warn against saying any evidence is all-caps overwhelming one way or the other.
Right, this is true, but the OVERWHELMING evidence of the past 100 years of American life is that vastly more people want space and a car than a smaller unit and a car-free lifestyle. This is mostly why the suburban share of US population has grown relentlessly for the entire 20th and 21st century

Not to brag, but I'm one of the top translators from English into Romanian for software and games. How I ended up in localization is a bit of an accident, but it turned out I was very well-suited for the job, and any project I got sent a test for, I got. I translated. I reviewed. I led teams.

You might think, “This person posts the same creature every year!” But honestly, seeing the same life return year after year is something truly wonderful𓂃🫧‪

OK- here we go. Sorry for the delay, I was not prepared for the exertion required in the thrill-a-minute adventure that is… CACAO FERMENTATION.

Yes, this will actually take 5 days. After that two days of drying. I’m not making this up. Nothing happens. Really. You’ll see.

Anyway, off we go!

It's not just grammar and context - it's the whole millieu of what phrasing we use when. Sarcasm, cultural references, indicators of class or age, pompousness or openness, curtness or friendliness - they can depend on the synonyms used.
Translation isn’t simply plugging words into a dictionary and spitting out the “same” word in a different language. It requires knowledge of grammar and context. It’s a skill that AI simply cannot replicate because a good translation drips with humanity.
As a translator and writer, I need authors to be standing in solidarity with translators.

I will boycott and call out authors who support AI translation of literary works in any capacity.

The arrest of online fanfic erotica writers (99% young women) in China is still ongoing, some are getting sentenced to 10 years in prison

I didn’t see any newer international coverage of this but I saw on Weibo today that more writers are getting sentenced right now

Chinese police target writers of gay erotica with prison terms and heavy fines
The crackdown in Anhui has triggered debates about possible abuses of power and whether the law itself is too heavy-handed.

Ok so yeah, this has quickly become the #1 misunderstanding about the canceled grants

the grants are not “subsidies” or “entitlements” to Harvard or Princeton or whatever

they aren’t going into universities’ endowments

they are competitive contracts won by these universities to do research
There is a PR narrative quickly emerging about “entitlement” of elite universities, as if this $ is some sort of subsidy

Harvard & others must counter this quickly

The $ doesn’t flow into Harvard’s coffers - this is grant money, most of which goes to research the govt has agreed has social value

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

Meanwhile, right wing clergy commit almost 40% of outside the home Child Sexual Assaults. Only cops--who are between 85 and 90% Republican--commit more.
Specifically, *right-wing white evangelicals* have been fed decades of lies by a hyperorganized apparatus of political organizations, churches, televangelists, and related organizations and influencers that a liberal, pluralistic, diverse democracy is in direct conflict with their religious freedom.
No. Christians feel persecuted because there is a vast media apparatus telling them that they are persecuted. There is no evidence whatsoever of large-scale discrimination against Christians in this country.
