I do agree in principle that it's extremely necessary to have a translated Hugo (and really overdue I think)

but my stance on this, as before, is it should be inclusive of all genres, so not just fiction and prose but also poetry, and of hybrid forms

I’m going to a workshop today about building to utopia. I refuse to let my imagination be constricted by our present which is so full of pain and oppression.

I finally made it back to my hometown in China after 7 years away. And among the photo albums my late uncle kept for me from my late maternal grandpa's belongings... I found a copy of his family genealogy book (now mine 😂) that traces our ancestors back to 1372 🤯

Yes, I guess I have unlocked a new role as a... librettist?

Coming in 2026 😁 More news soon when I have it

I have been travelling in Sichuan the past few weeks. People here laugh at me when I tell them Vancouver issues heat warnings when it gets above 30 or 35 C, but here I am looking at Chengdu issuing a cold warning that the temperature is now 4 to 7 C 🤣

working on a piece that critiques the exclusion of literary translators from so-called canlit, and it makes me angry but it's also cathartic 🥲

It's that giving time of year again, so this is a reminder that no matter how they try to dress it up, the Salvation Army is not a charity.

No one has to repost me. Don't let that be a valid reason not to support.

Writers, platforms, can say a few words about why human translation is important to them, or global coordination, or shifting power to Black publishers, or whatever. Say it, then add this link:

What I have been up to in Chengdu: eating the most delicious Sichuanese food and snacks, visiting sites connected to the poets Du Fu and Xue Tao (especially happy about the latter because yay literary female ancestors), touring a cool temple and buildings associated with various gods of literature

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

🕯 Today we pause to remember the trans people whose lives were taken by violence this year. Those lost to hatred, and those lost to the unbearable weight of living in a world that too often refuses to see their worth.

We hold every name and every story in our hearts.

I had the worst experience with a hotel ever last night, involving Habyt Chinatown in Singapore. No keys in the check-in mailbox, unreachable via emergency line, unreachable via whatsapp/text, inaccessible with really steep staircases, emergency keycard that can randomly open other guests' rooms!

made it to Singapore last night. a lot of drama dealing with a hotel (when i went to do the self check-in, keys were missing, emergency line was unreachable, whatsapp unreachable the room number didn't even exist, and i had to rely on other people staying there to try to contact them 😱)
