Not as far as I know, but there's a long 耕读传家 tradition. My grandpa's grandpa was a 私塾老师 and the oldest ancestor listed was supposed to have held office.

My understanding of Chinese history is not strong enough to parse what he was doing

I finally made it back to my hometown in China after 7 years away. And among the photo albums my late uncle kept for me from my late maternal grandpa's belongings... I found a copy of his family genealogy book (now mine 😂) that traces our ancestors back to 1372 🤯

Yes, I guess I have unlocked a new role as a... librettist?

Coming in 2026 😁 More news soon when I have it

Also I investigated further and found this other recent review on Google. I'm so shocked at how horrible these people are! What an absolute nightmare.

I booked via trip.com where the hotel is labelled "four stars" and trip.com is also refusing to give me the money back.

I will be at National Taiwan Normal University 师大 to do a class visit at the Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation on Thursday. I'll be sharing some translations of all five poets including in The Lantern and the Night Moths, and discussing poetry translation.

It is the 150th year anniversary of Qiu Jin's birth. It is an honor to translate the work of this amazing feminist poet. Just want to take some time today to honor her memory 💐

Good to see the protests from trans groups against transphobia at the main pride today as well. And of course, free free free Palestine.

Photos from the trans pride and the main pride in Taipei. One of my bucket list items was to attend pride in Asia. It was great to attend trans pride with friends and also meet a bunch of ace, aro, and genderqueer folks at the main pride today. My feet are so sore from the 2-hour long parade.

For folks in Taipei, I will be doing an event at NCCU tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon. Please share with folks may be interested. I will have a small number of my books on sale.

I read Qiu Jin's "Feminist Anthem," which originally appeared in the newspaper in front of the building, in Mandarin/English. I translated the lyrics last year for Tangram as a part of their play about Qiu Jin and Afong Moy. It means the world to be able to visit a site connected to Qiu Jin.

I am so happy I got to meet up with @eileenchongpoet.bsky.social in person at last.
Eileen also tagged along while I went and looked for the site of Qiu Jin's China Women's Newspaper 中国女报 in an alley of Shanghai.

Treated myself to some very fancy sushi to celebrate a bunch of milestones: finishing translations of a catalogue for a major Canadian museum, finishing stage 1 of a confidential consult for a super cool and well-known game, and also signing a contract to write my first libretto!

I had so much fun this evening watching King Hu's film 笑傲江湖/Swordsman (as a part of some curated events for an art exhibit in Richmond). Then there was a discussion between the curator Rebecca Wang and Dr. Helena Wu about Jin Yong adaptations, the jianghu, and wuxia literature.

"It’s a network of hidden-camera footage featuring Chinese women — filmed without their consent in private and public spaces like cafés, dressing rooms, clinics, subways, and even their own homes.

🚨 Over 600,000 users are reportedly part of this network."

This should be all over English media right now!! Please do not look away.

The people doing this to women are using platforms like Telegram and it needs to be stopped. It's so horrifying.

I'm glad to see more discussions about issues with waiving moral rights. Keeping moral rights is also the one main way that translators can contractually protect themselves from cases of not being credited and/or inappropriate rewriting.

some images of the said sword - okay i get it looks like the real deal, but the blades are very much unsharpened. it's only a weapon in the sense you can probably hit someone with it because it's heavy... 😅

More books: fiction writing, wuxia folklore and research, Chinese martial arts/weaponry, out-of-print English translation of Jin Yong's Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain, art-related books

Two of the books are in Traditional Chinese (see alt), one is in English

Will have more English books later
