I want to like Bluesky, but my feed is just a stream of bad news, doom-laden takes and “someone needs to fix this” messages despite only following urbanism/cycling accounts.

I came for active-travel info & news but come away from the app feeling miserable 🫩

ICYMI: “In the era of the climate crisis, politicians campaigning against bike-lanes aren’t fit for office.”— @taylornoakes.com in @cultmtl.com

Also in an era of worsening urban traffic, pollution, city noise, exploding public costs, competition among cities, & not nearly enough space in cities.

Meanwhile editors and journalists *still* claim they can’t state e.g. “driver crashes into X” because it somehow “risks apportioning blame and prejudicing any investigation” 💩

Reach PLC is just anti-cyclist rubbish most of the time
Ah, but look what carnage this cyclist caused. No drivers involved in this one either, of course. Not even in the text.

Great thread. It really does feel like progress in London is glacial outside of some bight-spots like Camden, Islington and Hackney, and seems to be getting slower. C7 is going backwards!
The demand for cycling is clearly there given ridership growing annually, but it’s being suppressed by inaction.
Lack of political will in London is perhaps most starkly visible in inaction around London's most #DangerousJunctions
1. We have 3 years in a row highlighted ratrun cluster in Wandsworth as the most dangerous in London, where ratruns cross main road cycle tracks. The same Cycle Superhighway, CS7...
NEW: INACTION CONTINUES ON DANGEROUS JUNCTIONS

📊The latest data published today, shows a picture of inaction from @mayoroflondon.bsky.social, TfL and local councils, when it comes to making junctions safe for cycling...

RIP some of the few wands TfL did reinstall on Clapham High Street.

Whilst locking my bike up, I saw:
1. Motorcyclist riding the entire length of the cycle lane
2. A car driver cut into the lane here to go around another driver waiting to turn right
3. A bus straddle the lane

“The city isn’t quite at Copenhagen or Amsterdam levels, but it’s closing in. Over 40 percent of locals commute by bike — about ten times the rate of a typical North American city — and you feel it immediately.” Via @momentummag.bsky.social

It’s no wonder Antwerp now ranks among the top ten most bicycle-friendly cities in the world, according to the Copenhagenize Index.

A human on a bicycle is nature's most efficient traveller.

A version of this graph went on to inspire Steve Jobs of Apple, who used it in a 1980 presentation describing the personal computer as "the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds."

Massive thanks to @wandsworthcycling.bsky.social for showing me the problem of traffic cutting across Upper Tooting Rd from side street to side street, barging in front of people crossing the road and bullying people riding bikes along CS7 out of the way.

My heart was in my mouth 🫣

Great quote from Cllr Sullivan:

`Cllr Sullivan put to Cllr Mitchell that while he claimed not to be against cycleways in principle, “I would challenge you to tell me where in practice you’re in favour of cycle lanes, because so far I haven’t heard any of that”.`

@psimonk.bsky.social Just wondering if there has been any discussion between LCC and TfL/Will Norman about this? The blue paint over the junctions is still missing, too!
Right, got the TfL designs back from my FOI about the changes to the Clapham High Street cycle "infra" following resurfacing.

The designs show the wands that were previously there will *not* be reinstated. This means roughly 40% of the wands have been removed from the westbound cycle lane. 1/

And people ask me why I don’t want kids 😐
My son was 1 when leaders gathered in Paris & pledged to keep warming BELOW 1.5C.

He’s now 11, & we’re spending our second year ABOVE 1.5C.

They’ve doomed all our children because preserving a suicidal economy is more important.

We. Should. Be. Furious.

When do towns and cities acknowledge that they won't win the hearts and minds of car drivers.

If you drive a car you'll go out of town. Fine, fuck em.

Counter program.

Don't compete, differentiate. No cars in town centres. Streets for people, socialising and culture and nice stuff

Overheard in the office today: “I think I’ll start cycling in instead of getting the tube, it’s only 25mins and will save me money” 👀

Looks like some people are keen to switch after the tube strike!
