RIP some of the few wands TfL did reinstall on Clapham High Street.

Whilst locking my bike up, I saw:
1. Motorcyclist riding the entire length of the cycle lane
2. A car driver cut into the lane here to go around another driver waiting to turn right
3. A bus straddle the lane

6 weeks into the new wands being put back into Clapham High Street and they’re already failing.

This should have been a kerb-protected cycle track. At this rate, most of the wands will be damaged again by Christmas.

This is what the town centre looked like circa 1940s. Instead f the car parks, there was light industry & commerce.

What is more welcoming: a dense mixed-use development (with potential for underground parking) harking back to its historic roots, or a concrete box for cars?

This is despite the town already having another multi-story car park near Breakwater beach, and another large car park at Oxen Cove - both of which rarely reach capacity. There was also a park and ride, but this seems to not have operated for the last year or so.

Never mind the fact there is a steam railway that could provide a connection to the town if it was reopened fully. Or regular ferries from Torquay. Or a regular bus service. What Brixham apparently needs (despite having thrived compared to neighbouring towns without it) is *more parking*.

However, what do the car-brained and car-focused Torbay and Brixham Town councils come up with? Yep, an EVEN BIGGER multi-story car park!

Wow. So much vision. 4/

This is obviously a terrible waste of prime land in a dense town centre, and is basically dead space.

Rightfully, there have been many ideas to regenerate this area to make this a good part of the town centre.

One even included an Eden-style project! www.hanginggardensofbrixham.com

Until 2006, Brixham had a multistory car park right in the middle. It was demolished due to being unsafe and underuse, and since there has been a surface level car park in its place. 2/

This is Brixham, a historic fishing town in the coast of South Devon. It’s one of the largest UK fishing ports, and only has one main road in and out. 1/

Wand removal wasn't raised in the road safety audit. However, removal of the CS7 markings and blue paint was: TfL responded that CS7 branding is deprecated & blue paint is "street clutter".

The plans show blue paint was supposed to be added across the junctions, but this hasn't happened (yet?). 3/

This means the wands before Lendal Terrace, under the railway bridge, and between Clement Avenue & St Lukes Avenue will not be put back. This is a proper step backwards, as there will only be a painted mandatory cycle lane in these locations.

All the wands pictured below are no more. 2/

Right, got the TfL designs back from my FOI about the changes to the Clapham High Street cycle "infra" following resurfacing.

The designs show the wands that were previously there will *not* be reinstated. This means roughly 40% of the wands have been removed from the westbound cycle lane. 1/

Hell yeah, new Sheffield stands replacing the old wheel-bender rack outside Lidl Clapham Junction 😎

Recent pictures post resurfacing on C7 (note also no replaced way-finding markings). No sign of the bollards, & given others have already been re-installed, I guess they’re not coming back?

What is going on here? @willnorman.co.uk

Anyone know why TfL has not replaced these missing bollards on Clapham High Street after resurfacing? Cyclists now have less protection than before! A backwards step 😠

Had this dicey experience with a lorry due to a dangerous cycle lane on Upper Richmond Rd on Wednesday eve 😳 The lane encouraged this driver's very dodgy "pass" & left me stuck alongside a huge HGV with no protection.

An example of why paint ≠ protection. No cycle lane would be better here!

Broomwood Road, Wandsworth, London.

“Cycling on the pavement? Don’t even think about it! Wait, you’re a driver? Why didn’t you say so! Here’s a nice painted bay for you on the pavement 🫡”

Another @rbkc.gov.uk classic: plants get more protection than people cycling on the recently finished Sloane Street “improvements”

Bit like this place in my hometown where parking was removed. As you can see, it has destroyed the harbour and business there 😔

Is this the only small driveway in the UK with its own double traffic lights?
July 25, 2025 at 8:50 PM
This terrace used to be parking for about 6 cars until two years ago!

I wonder if the traders here would claim removing the parking is “killing their business”?

People > parking

Shared space with motor vehicles they works in Paraty, Brazil, thanks to 17th century cobbles. Vehicles struggle to move faster than 10mph.

Maybe Exhibition Road in RBKC would work if it had this surface treatment!
