As we are now T minus 3.5 days from Thanksgiving, if you need to deploy Operation Avoid The Boundary Tramplers, tonight is when you post where they snoop about a headache or a queasy kid, or a funny noise from your car, or your pet acting strange, or a serious work issue or an unexpected paper.

Every parent whose career has to do with online safety also bans Roblox.

It's finally happened: I wrote a whole scene for a fic in my head as I was going to sleep and I actually remember all of the good bits the next day

This feels like a bad omen somehow

heads up that even if you didn't ever actively intend to do so, a lot of people are accidentally heavily invested in AI right now and didn't notice that it happened, just from the mechanics of how these index funds work. if you'd rather bet on people it may be worth looking into moving things around
friend shared this, TLDR if you're fortunate enough to have any retirement invested and it's in a previously not crazy index fund, a lot of your investment is now in the AI tech bubble. I just reallocated to options less tied up in it

p.s. this is not investment advice, I'm not a certified anything

I think one of the strengths of Stargate is that everyone is behaving like they're in a different genre of show.

Carter is from Star Trek. Teal'c is from Star Wars. Jackson is from The Mummy. O'Neil is genre savvy from the Aliens / Predator universe and isn't going out like a chump.

HOLY SHIT. They found the genes for fibromyalgia - and it's *not* autoimmune, it's the central nervous system. It's very cool to see some progress made on the thing that's ruined my life since late teenage years!
Medical Republic: 'Fibromyalgia finally gets a genetic fingerprint'

'Additionally, certain risk loci overlapped with long covid (BPTF) and ME/CFS (OLFM4, RABGAP1L/GPR52), two poorly characterised disorders, albeit with different lead variants.'

It's a great cosmic joke that neurodivergence both runs in families and gets diagnosed based on parent reports. I was diagnosed at 30 because a man who has eaten potatoes every day for 57 years and a woman who collects loose buttons decided I was a perfectly normal child.

From this minister's op-ed: "People wanting to experience God are more likely to meet the Divine trying to shut down the Broadview, Illinois, ICE facility than we ever were in church...God does not live in our houses of worship, but...with those who are bearing the brunt of cruelty in this moment."

Heads up that this production (which also stars Lupita Nyong'o as Viola, and her brother Junior as Sebastian) will be airing on PBS on Friday night. I cannot WAIT.
I mostly do not miss the East Coast, except when I find out Peter Dinklage and Sandra Oh starred in Twelfth Night at Shakespeare in the Park, which New Yorkers could go see for FREE

Reading The Lord of the Rings as a teenager who had already consumed a massive amount of fantasy fiction really did a number on me. I was young enough for it to lodge itself deep enough to become an intrinsic part of me and old enough to understand why its derivatives don't come close to touching it
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"
