🧵 But I want to highlight this one because, along with just causing needless ridiculous expenses for companies, it's also (often) a safety hazard to prioritise VERY minor short-term profit the way skimping on paying a translator can do. Just pay a damn human to do your translations.
So if the wheels of a 200000 Euro transport container break and a 20 million Euro satellite spills onto the tarmac, because the machine translation system did not catch that the author of the source text got "brake" and "break" mixed up, hey, at least you saved a few hundred bucks for a translator.

The whole thread, but this especially. Please. Just value translation. It is creative work, especially if it's literary translation. It can be incredibly hard and challenging work. It is deeply rewarding work. It deserves to be valued and cherished.
So anyway I don't have a right answer there but just
*throws up hands*
Please value translation more? This shit is so difficult (end)

There is *no* ethical use of genAI. It is built on stolen art, through exploitative labour, and every day as they train new model and answer query, they burn immense amount of energy & water.

It has no place in our field, none.

FYI if you cannot read the language of a primary source, hire a translator. You know. A creative arts professional who understands what they’re doing, what you’re looking for and what the nuances between languages are.

We do not throw fellow creators under the bus, especially not for stolen slop.

listen I know we are in a confusing place because all the shittiest tech bros decided to slap a sparkle sticker labeled AI on literally everything, including things they have been doing for years.

there is definitely nuance to parse out! I get that!

but some of the arguments on the timeline...

Also there are 11 more days to submit your queer speculative stories already published in 2025!

The editors love reading far and wide, so please especially consider submitting work from journals and anthologies they might not be aware of.

Just a reminder writer friends, Delilah Waan has an incredible example of an AI statement on her website breaking down her views and every area in publishing where AI could creep in and how she tries to avoid it. If you feel strongly, here's a great way to approach having a statement for readers.

So, SFWA is very much not my circus, not my monkeys, but here are my two general thoughts right now:

1) clear rules excluding AI-created content are important to hold the line, especially for publishers who would want nothing more than to toss their editors into the drink.

They shouldn't even let folks who use LLMs for their writing BE IN THE ORG, much less on award ballots.

SFWA, constantly doing the worst and thinking they're great.
Another Nebula Awards nomination cycle is in full swing, and the addition of poetry and comics, along with the presence of LLMs in industry, required careful consideration.

Read on, and vote well!

We trust our voters & look forward to what they choose to celebrate.

I agree with this entire thread. I am deeply disappointed by @sfwa.org 's decision, especially considering how many of its members (including me) had our work stolen for the creation of that generative AI. There is NO way anyone should be eligible for a Nebula without doing ALL the writing themself.
I'm so disappointed in @sfwa.org for this. I understand that by requiring disclosure of partial LLM-created works, as their announcement states, means SFWA's letting "nominators and the voters" make the final decision. BUT YOU'RE STILL ALLOWING SUCH WORKS ON THE NEBULA AWARDS FINAL BALLOT! 1/

I think parsing what % of a work can be based upon the unpaid nonconsensual exploitation of your members while still being eligible for industry awards is... a poor choice.

I would not pay dues to a professional organization who does not think my work is worth protecting.

Well, that certainly is an interesting new marketing strategy that the Lychee Slicer folks are trying out.

Can't wait and see how attracting the attention of the legal departments of every mini game company and every company that licenses IP into that market works out for them.

Can we make "surface tension-level understanding" a phrase? It feels so right to describe the engagement of the billionaire class with works like Tolkien and Blade Runner.
his statement about, I think a cybertruck, being something Bladerunner would have driven really cemented to me his barely surface level engagement with sci fi.

Like, it's barely surface level.

Can we call their understanding surface-tension level?
