Lest we forget. #Canada.
From Veteran's Affairs Canada website:

"Most First Nations Veterans were unable to receive their pensions, grants and benefits. This was due to their legal status as wards of Canada under the Indian Act."

Shameful & despicable behaviour from Canada.

A reminder that this anti-trans panic is 100% bullshit and exactly none of our country’s problems are related to someone expressing their gender identity and everyone who isn’t a hate-filled weirdo knows it.

It's about a young Canadian woman from an evangelical Christian family studying to be a singer in the UK in the 1950s, and it's a superb portrayal of somebody's world opening up by art, of the loneliness and wonder of being in a strange country, and of the working business of music.

Robertson Davies' A MIXTURE OF FRAILTIES is extremely cheap on Kindle right now - don't be put off by it being the third book in a trilogy, it's effectively a stand-alone and as I've grown older I've become increasingly convinced it's the best of his novels.

My feelings about the BBC are largely in line with my feelings about the NHS.

I think it is vital we have a publicly owned and funded broadcaster and its enemies are my enemies, but I *detest* the way it's talked about as some gift to the peasantry we're supposed to be fawningly grateful for.
Revealing division in my timeline between (1) my insider friends who have lived privileged lives who are very keen that we defend the BBC and think it's important it survives and (2) my outsider friends who feel (at best) ambivalent about the BBC's survival.

Wooing the Witch Queen by @stephanieburgis.bsky.social is a cosy, humorous romp of a fantasy romance.
Light and witty, it keeps you turning the pages just to see what delight awaits next.

I’ve already preordered book 2!

QoTD: what fantasy creature would you be in the court of the witch queen?

My piece on the allies being systematically intimidated is one of the bits of work I am most proud of putting together.

But beyond that it is a story of anti trans activists inside and outside the organisation working together to take down Tavistock and stop trans kids from existing.
In our article:

From allies inside of Tavistock:

“Gender criticals claim they have been silenced, but they have been platformed in media and given words in articles, and space in interviews,”

This is a delightful read about a really fun, not uniquely British phenomenon but definitely not a worldwide one, on Hollow Ways, which I personally consider to be deeply sacred spaces

underrated Tatsuya Nakadai recommendation: Hideo Gosha's Heat Wave, a period yakuza film that feels like Lady Snowblood + Red Peony Gambler. an extremely good-looking film about a gambler looking to avenge her father's murder, but she unfortunately discovers that the evildoer is a babe.

I love how some of the responses to the calling churches for baby formula TikTok lady is people saying with a straight face, 'well, you have to be careful because grifters'.

You think grifters ask for a single small can of baby formula?

You think Jesus would ask for proof of poverty?

Thuan: world's most unlikely spy
(actually most people underestimate him so it worked out ok but still)
I'm in the first couple of chapters of Binding Thorns atm and 1) Thuan's first meeting with Asmodeus becomes very funny with the irony of "that's your future husband!" 2) I'm dying to hear Nga(?)'s logic for sending him of all people as a spy but 3) I guess it worked out for her?

Finished @kateelliottsff.bsky.social's The Nameless Lands. Wow. What a ride.
Fantastic worldbuilding, complex and layered characters, and such meaty politics. Loved the various reversals, and the way things turned out to have repercussions many times over.
