hitting a point where if a piece of fiction is advertised to me and more than like 25% of the visible characters are men I'm checking out unless the pitch is really strong, particularly if it's written by a woman, like, girl, what are you doing, they write plenty about themselves

Having spent theast chunk of time in Guilin, I would apologize in advance if the first wave of stories I write this year are all also set in various iterations of Guilin. But Guilin is cool and I had a lot of fun here so I am not sorry one whit.

Went to Dragon*Con and was having a hard time catching up with a friend (they were a guest wrangler). We managed to coordinate & their guest was w/ them. Ran up to my friend (who ran to me), hugged, squee'd. Behind them, watching this with baffled eyes, was Alan Tudyk. I waved to him and left.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

Please Quote this with your most minor celebrity interaction

We are heading down south to Guilin today with the visiting family, then to Xi'an after a few days. I am hoping this gets some of the new story juice flowing for the year; the well is stressed out and dry and I need to do a little refilling.

So I just heard about this book which was a practical guide to how average people could resist Nazis in every day work by bogging them down with malicious compliance etc. Of interest to... Umm historians, I guess? Merry Christmas! 🎄🌟🎁

#MeetTheWebcomic George wants to be a knight, but first she has to convince someone to take her as squire.
Serafina doesn’t want an apprentice. Too bad she’s getting one anyway.

Eldest and I watched this and they were almost late for school. "Seriously," says the child, "that's SO COOL." and yes, yes it is.
OH MY FUCKING GOD this is so good

for renaissance music reasons

for arranging reasons, DAMN

for 'it's One Night in Bangkok as if Kit Marlowe wrote opera' reasons, especially
I love the fucking internet, part 972964386: "One Night In Bangkok" arranged and performed as a 16th century chanson. youtu.be/i3jHv0GZB9U?...

No shade at all to people who want to make video, nor to people who watch video as their primary means of getting information. But this is an ecosystem! We need text as well as video in the public sphere.

Real easy way to honor Rob Reiner is to remember this. The 'courage' part means even when you're scared or when it's hard or when it might cost you something.
Rob Reiner: “Silence in the face of authoritarianism is complicity. Speaking out is a patriotic act. Democracy doesn’t defend itself. It requires participation, vigilance, and courage from ordinary people."

Get your shopping in and buy indie press stories for the holidays! (also, the DPP webstore is always open, just sayin'.)

We might get snow in Beijing tomorrow! It's a rare enough (took until March last year for snow in the city proper, or at least my part of it) and this New Englander is desperate for some proper snowfall. A whole predicted 3cm! Not the 6 inch falls I used to get in CT, but I'll take what I can get.

@crossingwinter.bsky.social is a bad influence. "someone tell me not to do this", I ask. instead, I'm told to write the novel.

*sobs* it was only supposed to be an exploratory short story

It has never been a secret that I love Mortal Kombat, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa's influence on Shang Tsung is what *made* him into the way the villain was represented for decades. His work was always amazing in what he did, but he will always be my first (and my favorite) Shang Tsung.

i think the inability to tell the difference between "i don't like it" and "i don't like it so i have to figure out a way to imply this thing i don't like is morally evil" is the most fundie thing i see people who are aren't technically fundie regularly do these days

I promise you that if you ever say "I enjoyed that thing you wrote", it will occupy my attention for a solid week
I’ve sometimes fallen into the trap of thinking that complementing a creative person for their work is less sophisticated or desired than discussion or debate about it but very often the best thing you can say to them is hell yeah and that doesn’t make you dumb it just makes you nice

also, y'know, I have this out today - and "mildly dubious consentacles" is probably the best tag I've ever had applied to a story.
Short story: "Can't Let Go" by @dei2dei.bsky.social

Excerpt:
The faint glow has moved farther away.

A cloud of bioluminescence moving like that? Her heart rate kicks up, interest piqued. Hope spreads in her chest. Something this unusual might be just what she needs.
